Day 1

Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya

Your private Compass Odyssey guide, Nicholas greets you today at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and says Jambo! (“Welcome!” in the local Swahili language). Nicholas can assist with any arrival requirements, such as acquiring the local currency, before he transfers you to your welcoming boutique hotel in the leafy upmarket suburb of Karen. Along the way, he will discuss your preferred sightseeing itinerary for tomorrow.

Regarded as the major economic and transport hub of East Africa, Kenya’s sprawling capital of Nairobi is an unavoidable stopover on many travellers’ itineraries. While most wouldn’t choose to spend longer in the city than necessary, its temperate climate makes it a wise location to acclimatise and recuperate when first arriving in East Africa, which can take a day or two due to the long journey most travellers endure to get here. Your sightseeing can be totally customised to your wishes and discussed with Nicholas upon your arrival.

Day 2

Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi, Kenya

Nairobi has some creditable sightseeing destinations and most of these are located in the leafy suburbs of Karen and Lang’ata, in the south-west of the city where there are several very pleasant and comfortable country-house style hotels and guesthouses that hark back to the colonial-era and the area’s ‘Happy Valley’ residents. Here you will find the captivating elephant orphanage run by the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, the Giraffe Centre run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife, the Karen Blixen Museum celebrating the life of the colonial-era, Danish writer who lived here, and a number of interesting crafts shops and workshops. Located between these attractions and JKIA is Nairobi National Park, which is home to more than 80 species of large mammals - including the so-called Big Five with the exception of elephants - and offers a surprisingly authentic if slightly surreal safari experience almost within earshot of downtown Nairobi’s traffic. All entrance fees are included.
