Mekele – Hamede Ela Drive to Hamedela via Berhale
Mekele – Hamede Ela Drive to Hamedela via Berhale
The Danakil Depression is recognized as one of the most inhospitable regions in the world, yet it is incredibly spectacular, filled with vibrant colors, particularly in the sulfur springs. This desert region features several areas that lie more than 100 meters (328 feet) below sea level. As you travel, you will pass through the small town of Berhale, where camel caravans stop before heading to the northern highlands. Along the way, you will see numerous long camel caravans either coming to the salt mine or leaving the Danakil with their salt-loaded camels.
After a 3—4 hour drive, you will reach Camp Hamedela, a village with a population of about 500 people. Enjoy the sunset at Dallol before settling in for an overnight camping experience at Hamed Ela.
