Forest Camp - Shira 1 Camp
Today, we’ll continue our trek as we leave behind the rainforest and enter the unique savannah landscape of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail leads us through expansive fields of tall grasses, heather, and volcanic rock covered with lichen beards, creating an almost ethereal atmosphere. As we ascend through the rolling hills, we’ll cross several streams, enjoying the serenity of the surroundings.
After a steady climb, we’ll reach the Shira Ridge, where the path gently descends towards Shira 1 Camp. The stunning views of Kibo Peak across the plateau are truly awe-inspiring, offering a perfect opportunity to take in the grandeur of the mountain. We’ll set up camp here, ready to enjoy dinner and rest for the night.
Shira Camp 1 - Moir Hut
After breakfast, you will continue on your hike across and up the Shira plateau to Shira Camp 2 at 3,850 meters. Here you will join trekkers from the Machame Route whilst enjoying stunning views across the valley below and the western breach of Kilimanjaro above. The plateau is exposed so be prepared for strong winds and temperatures getting below zero in the early hours.
You’ll then continue up the Shira Caldera and onto an off-the-beaten path to Moir Hut.
Today is long and finishes at high altitude. You may start feeling altitude sickness symptoms. Make sure you monitor yourself closely. Sleeping high on this night will pay dividends on your trek going forward.

Moir Hut - Lava Tower - Barranco Camp
Today we’ll continue our trek through a semi-desert landscape as we make our way towards the Lava Tower and the impressive Shark’s Tooth formation at 4,600 meters. This section of the route offers dramatic views of the surrounding terrain, with volcanic rock formations and alpine desert stretching out before us.
After reaching Lava Tower, we’ll stop for lunch, giving you a chance to rest and refuel. Following lunch, we’ll join the Southern Circuit trail, which descends towards Barranco Camp (3,900 meters). The descent ensures we spend the night at a similar elevation to the previous night, which helps with acclimatization.
This day’s strategy of climbing high and sleeping low is key to adapting to the higher altitudes, which is an important part of ensuring a successful summit. You’ll have a relaxing evening at Barranco Camp, ready for the next day’s adventure.

Barranco Camp - Karanga Camp - Barafu Camp
After breakfast, we’ll depart from Barranco Camp and begin our ascent up the steep Barranco Wall, a dramatic rock face that requires some light scrambling. This challenging climb leads us to a ridge, where we’ll enjoy panoramic views as we make our way towards Karanga Valley Camp.
From Karanga Camp, we’ll continue on to the junction connecting to the Mweka Trail, which brings us closer to the summit. As we reach Barafu Hut, we will have completed the Southern Circuit, offering views of Mount Kilimanjaro's summit from many different angles. From here, you’ll be able to gaze upon both the Mawenzi and Kibo peaks, a sight that marks your proximity to the top.
At Barafu Camp, we’ll set up camp, take a well-deserved rest, enjoy dinner, and prepare for the summit push. It’s important to rest and conserve energy for the final ascent, as summit day will begin in the early hours of the morning.
Barafu camp - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Camp
You will wake up around 1130pm, and after some tea and biscuits, start climbing to Uhuru peak into the early morning. You will head in a northwesterly direction and ascend through heavy scree towards Stella Point on the crater rim. At Stella Point (5685m) you will stop for a short rest and be rewarded with perhaps the most beautiful sunrise you will ever see. The time spent on the summit will depend on the weather conditions. Do not stop here for too long, as it will be extremely difficult to start again due to cold and fatigue.
You will walk back to Barafu from the summit. Here you will have a well-earned (but short) rest and collect the rest of your gear before heading down to Mweka Hut (3100m). Be sure to enjoy your accomplishment and a day to remember for the rest of your life.
