The Great Wildebeest Migration is a natural phenomenon determined by the availability of grazing which can be witnessed all year around between Tanzania and Kenya in East Africa.
The migration is compiled of 500,000 zebras that precede 1.8 million wildebeest and the following 100,000 plains game made up of eland, impala and gazelle which are following the scent of rain in search of rich pastures and clean water. The journey is an estimated 1,800 miles that the animals cover in this 12-month period.
The short rains begin in Serengeti in early November so the herds of the wildebeest migration start to arrive through the north of the park from Maasai Mara. Throughout the month they head to the short grass plains of Serengeti around the east of the park.
