Tarangire National Park has the highest population of elephants in Tanzania, comprising herds of up to 300 elephants who scratch the dry river bed for underground streams. There are also the migratory wildebeests, zebras, buffalos, impalas, gazelles, hartebeest and eland. It is the greatest concentration of wildlife outside the Serengeti ecosystem. It is a buffet for predators and the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as the stately fringe-eared oryx and peculiar long-necked gerenuk are regularly observed.
