The landscape transforms dramatically as you journey deeper into the Afar Triangle. Lush highlands give way to arid plains, and finally to the alien-like terrain of the Danakil. The day's crescendo arrives at Lake Asale, where you'll witness a breathtaking sunset over the shimmering salt flats. Your first day concludes at the Sabba campsite, where dinner under the vast African sky awaits.

Dallol's Dawn to Erta Ale's Dusk

Your second day in the Danakil Depression begins in darkness, setting out at 5:00 AM for Earth's most surreal landscape. As you approach Dallol, the rising sun unveils a kaleidoscope of colors. A short hike reveals sulfur lakes and mineral formations in vibrant hues – nature's psychedelic masterpiece. Next, you'll explore salt mountains, enjoying a picnic breakfast amidst towering formations. Observing salt workers and possibly camel caravans offers insight into the harsh realities of life here.
The afternoon brings a drive to Erta Ale Volcano, crossing lunar-like terrain with a picnic lunch en route. Arriving at base camp, you'll prepare for the day's highlight – a sunset hike to the volcano. As darkness falls, you'll witness one of nature's most awe-inspiring spectacles: Erta Ale's permanent lava lake, a churning cauldron of molten rock glowing in the night.
The day concludes with a night hike back to camp, where you'll sleep under the stars.

From Erta Ale to Addis

Rising at 5:00 AM, you witness the sun emerging over Erta Ale's volcanic landscape, its first rays painting the lava lake in surreal hues. This last glimpse of the volcano's raw power serves as a fitting finale to your otherworldly adventure.
Returning to base camp, you enjoy a hearty breakfast before beginning the journey back to civilization. The drive to Semera offers time for reflection, as the alien terrain of the Danakil gradually gives way to more familiar landscapes.
Arriving in Semera for a late lunch, you have a chance to readjust to the rhythms of everyday life. The afternoon sees you bidding farewell to the Afar region as you board your flight back to Addis Ababa.
