Day 1

Dar es Salaam to Kilwa Masoko

Dar es Salaam to Kilwa Masoko

Your driver will pick you from your hotel at 07:00am airport or ferry port at 0845am and start driving to Kilwa Historical town.
Arrive in Kilwa old town and check in at your accommodation. After lunch you will go out for Kilwa Masoko tour.

Kilwa town is divided into three different towns. Kilwa Kivinje, Kilwa Masoko, Kilwa Kisiwani with Songo Mnara and Sanje Ya Kiti. Kilwa Masoko is however the least interesting history wise, but the modern town right now, and Centre of operations as well as location of all modern day facilities. The others are the places to go for historical reasons.

Day 2

Visit Kilwa Kisiwani

Visit Kilwa Kisiwani

Morning after breakfast, take a local dhow to the Island of Kilwa to visit the old ruins.

Kilwa Kisiwani, is where you will find the greatest collection of ruins. Directly on the Northern shore one will find the old Omani Fort, which is built on the foundations of the old Portuguese fort, in the early 19th Century, and where still an old wooden door remains. The Big Mosque is from the 12th Century and was further extended up to the 15th Century. It was said to be the largest mosque in East Africa. The Great House directly south of the mosque was once a complex building which was most likely the Sultan´s palace. In it there are four graves, of which one is rumored to be of a Sultan.

After visiting the Island you will go back to the lodge for lunch. After lunch you will relax in the beach.

Day 3

Visit Kilwa Kivinje then drive back to Dar es Salaam

Morning after breakfast we will visit Kilwa Kivinje 30km north of Kilwa Masoko.

The town has a good number of old colonial buildings and crumbling remains of ancient Oman buildings. The Old German Boma in Kilwa Kivinje overlooks the waterfront and is the town’s oldest building. Kilwa Kivinje is a 19th Century Arabian slave and ivory trading town from which southern caravans started off into the interior of Africa. On the decline of Arab rule towards the end of the 19th century, the German colonial government constructed a fort and enlarged the town.

After visit the place you will start driving back to Dar es Salaam with lunch stop on the way.

On arrival in Dar es Salaam your drive will drop you off at place of your choice.
