Swakopmund - City Tour

Your guide will pick you up either from the airport or accommodation in Windhoek. We will drive westwards to the Namibian Coast. We will embark on a city tour that enlightens you on the early days in the Namibian Coast dating back to the late 1800s, with plenty of anecdotes. Township tours are optional but highly recommended as one visits the townships of Mondesa and DRC. You get to visit the market, traditional elders and kindergarten. Living Desert Tour and Welwitschia Drive

Living Desert Tour and Welwitschia Drive

After breakfast, you will embark on an exciting Living Desert Tour, a guided 4x4 drive into the dunes. Explore the incredible landscape and its sneaky creatures that have adapted to living in a harsh environment. For these little creatures who either camouflage, use their agility, or fake deaths, they help serve food on the table or somehow avoid being someone’s meal.

You will return around lunchtime, and after a rest, you will embark on the Welwitschia Drive in the late afternoon. This drive takes you through several beacons at points of interest, culminating at one of Namibia's oldest plants, Welwitschia mirabilis (over 2,000 years old). The other stops include lichen fields, drought-resistant bushes (dollar and ink bushes), tracks of ox wagons made decades ago but still visible, the "moon landscape", Old South African Camp (WW1), and a dolorite dyke among others. The moon landscape is a rolling, barren area of rocky desert formed by valleys around the course of the Swakop River.

Catamaran and Sandwich Harbour Tour

After breakfast, you will be taken to Walvis Bay Waterfront. You will embark on a boat cruise with possible sightings of humpback whales, Southern right whales, minke and even killer whales, as well as leatherback turtles. Bottlenose and the endemic Benguela (heavysides) dolphins are present all year round. You might be entertained by Cape fur seals and pelicans jumping on the boat for a free ride and food.

After lunch on the boat, you will go for heavy 4x4 sand dune driving at Sandwich Harbour, where the dunes meet the sea. This is a large saltwater lagoon with extensive tidal mudflats and a band of reed-lined pools fed by freshwater springs. This forms a Ramsar Site (Wetlands of International Importance), an important bird refuge site for over 30 species. Besides mammals like black-backed jackal, oryx, brown hyaena and springbok, you get to see the breathtaking scenery, including pink lakes.

After breakfast, we will head northwards past a shipwreck to the largest seal colony in the world, the Cape Cross. There can be up to 200,000 seals at a given time, making an unexpected noise that can be described as a harsh discordant mixture of sounds resembling an entire farmyard of animals at full volume. We will leave the coastal environment and make our way to the Spitzkoppe Mountains. These mountains resemble the famous Swiss mountain, hence named the "Matterhorn of Africa". We will visit some San (Bushman) rock paintings in the afternoon.
