We depart early from the historical town of Gondar and drive about 2.5 hours on a comfortable, tarred road to Debark, where we obtain permission to enter Simien National Park at the park head office.

From there, we drive 22 km further to the Simien Lodge, located within the national park. Here, we embark on a leisurely walk of about 3 to 4 hours, stopping often to admire the breathtaking views of the escarpment, take photos, and observe the friendly gelada baboons. Along the way, we will also encounter a variety of plants and flowers that flourish in this unique ecosystem. Our first night will be spent at Sankabar camp (3250 m).

Trek from sanakaber campsite to gich campsite

The hike from Sankaber to Geech camp takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, leading us through increasingly spectacular scenery filled with diverse flowers and trees. There’s a chance to see a klipspringer or a Minilik bushbuck, and if we’re very lucky, we might even spot a leopard!

The entertaining gelada baboons are always nearby, providing delightful company. Along our route, we will visit the impressive 500 m high Jinbar waterfall and stop for lunch on the banks of the Jinbar River. We will pass through the area formerly known as Geech village, where we can have coffee with a local family in their traditional tukul hut, a glimpse into the daily lives of the mountain people. We will spend the night at Geech camp (3600 m).

Hike from gich campsite to chennek campsite

Hike from gich campsite to chennek campsite

The trek from Geech to Chennek camp takes about 7 to 8 hours and is considered the best trekking route in the Simien Mountains. Along the way, we will visit Imet Gogo, the single most spectacular spot in the entire range.

At 3926 m, Imet Gogo offers incomparable 360-degree views of canyons, cliffs, and valleys that seem to stretch on forever. After soaking in the stunning vistas, we will descend into the valley of Meflekiaw. From there, we will climb approximately 500 meters to reach a point called Enatye at 4070 m, the highest point of today’s trek.

After enjoying the views from Enatye, we will descend to the beautiful Chennek area, which is home to many gelada baboons often seen in large numbers around the camp. It’s also possible to spot walia ibex grazing, mock fighting, or simply relaxing on a rock in the sun. We will overnight at Chennek camp (3600 m).
