Lake Eyasi is about an hour’s drive southwest of Karatu and Ngorongoro. This mildly alkaline lake stretches 55 km, with the Ngorongoro Highlands to the northeast and the Serengeti plains to the north. Over 100 years ago, when the Masai moved into Ngorongoro and Serengeti, the Datoga and other indigenous bushmen were pushed south, many settling around Lake Eyasi.

Several private campsites with basic facilities are available near the lake. The Sibiti River feeds the lake, sometimes flowing year-round in wet years, while other inflows dry up in the dry season. The lake itself can nearly vanish in the dry months but serves as a seasonal stop for migrating flamingos.

Elephants are scarce, and the few remaining black rhinoceroses are found in the Moru Koppies area. The Serengeti also offers excellent birdwatching, with common species like ostriches and kori bustards. The most distinctive small bird is the lilac-breasted roller.
