You'll find dense vegetation in certain areas, including elephant grass, acacia woodlands, and lush groundwater forests. Tarangire is renowned for its families of elephants, often seen gathering near the river, along with giraffes, bushbucks, and hartebeests. These creatures are accompanied by various predators, such as lions and leopards. Notably, Tarangire National Park is home to more breeding bird species than anywhere else in the world! After breakfast, you will set off early in the morning for Lake Manyara National Park, an untouched paradise renowned for its diverse birdlife and tree-climbing lions. The park's western border is defined by the dramatic escarpment of the Rift Valley, while to the east lies the shallow, alkaline Lake Manyara. This lake, which floods and dries with the seasons, is home to thousands of flamingos during the rainy months. The name Manyara is derived from the Maasai word 'emanyara,' referring to a common plant used to construct protective enclosures around family homesteads (bomas). The park boasts a variety of vegetation types, from savannah to evergreen forest. As you explore, you may encounter giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, buffalo, elephants, and, if you’re fortunate, lions resting in the trees. It is renowned for its geological wonders and as a natural reserve that hosts some of the highest densities of large mammal populations found anywhere in Africa. The drive down into the crater itself is an adventure, and once you reach the crater floor, you'll find yourself surrounded by numerous wildebeests, zebras, gazelles, and over 500 species of birds. The crater offers the best opportunity to see the endangered black rhinos, which can occasionally be spotted in the open grasslands. As Tanzania's oldest national park, it is also one of the oldest ecosystems on the planet, with its climate and vegetation remaining largely unchanged for millions of years. While the Serengeti is teeming with wildlife, it is most famous for the annual Great Migration. Each year, vast numbers of wildebeest, along with significant herds of zebra and antelope, move in search of fresh grazing, following an annual pattern determined by rainfall. From there, you will travel to the northern coast of Zanzibar, known as Nungwi, which boasts white coral sands that seem to glow even after sunset. Despite its lively atmosphere, Nungwi retains a sense of seclusion. Its expansive coastline is perfect for swimming and snorkeling in some of Africa's most pristine, reef-rich waters. This beach is one of the few in Zanzibar that remains largely unaffected by the extreme tidal fluctuations, making it ideal for all-day water activities.
There are numerous activities available, such as walking tours, sunset cruises, diving excursions, and parasailing, but simply watching traditional dhow boats bobbing in the water during sunset can truly captivate you in this enchanting African paradise.
