Day 2
Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp
Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Camp
This morning, we will begin with a relaxed breakfast at our hotel before departing at approximately 08:00hrs. Our goal is to reach Machame Gate (1,640 meters) by 10:00hrs. Upon arrival, we will complete the necessary registration formalities and meet your mountain team, including your guides, porters, and the rest of the crew who will accompany you on your ascent.
Today’s trek is a challenging one, with a total altitude gain of 1,332 meters over a distance of just under 11 kilometers (7 miles). You can expect to be walking for 5 to 6 hours.
The day’s hike begins along a wide trail that gradually winds its way through dense forest, where towering trees are draped in vibrant green moss. As the path steepens and narrows, the vegetation changes, and you’ll encounter colorful flowers like Impatiens kilimanjari and Impatiens pseudoviola. You’ll also be treated to a distant view of Kibo Peak to the east.

Day 3
Machame Camp – Shira Caves
Machame Camp – Shira Caves
Today’s trek is relatively short but steep as we ascend to an altitude of 3,804 meters. The challenging morning hike along a narrow path is well worth it when we stop for lunch, offering stunning views to the south and a clear sight of Kibo Peak. It’s hard to imagine a more scenic spot for a break.
After an early start around 08:30hrs, we expect to reach Shira Caves by 14:00hrs. Along the way, we’ll encounter the unique moorland lobelias and the striking dark obsidian rocks of the Shira Plateau. Once at Shira Caves, you’ll have time to enjoy breathtaking views of natural landmarks such as the ‘Shira Cathedral,’ Klute Peak, and even Mount Meru in the distance, before we settle down for dinner around 18:00hrs.

Day 4
Shira Caves – Barranco Camp
Shira Caves – Barranco Camp
Today’s stage offers a change of pace with a longer trek compared to yesterday’s journey. We begin at an altitude of 3,804 meters and, despite covering nearly 10 km (6 miles), we will gain only 146 meters in elevation by the time we reach Barranco Camp around 16:00hrs. Along the way, we will ascend to the base of the Lava Tower, standing at 4,630 meters, before descending to our camp for the night. While this may seem like a detour, it plays a key role in helping with acclimatization at high altitudes.
The overall distance means we’ll be walking for approximately 6 to 8 hours, excluding breaks. We begin with breakfast at 07:00hrs and depart at 08:30hrs, starting our trek across the rocky landscape of the Shira Plateau. Initially, the vegetation is sparse, with only a few hardy lichens to observe. As we continue towards Lava Tower, we’ll stop for a picnic lunch around 13:00hrs. After passing the Lava Tower, we will descend to Barranco Camp.

Day 5
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today will be a challenge, that much is certain! We will breakfast again at 07.00hrs, in anticipation of what will prove to be a long day. Our departure time today will be 08.00hrs, with a cooked lunch scheduled at Karanga for midday. Our ultimate destination, Barafu Camp, should be reached by 16.00hrs with our dinner at 18.00hrs. The beginning of today’s trek involves something a bit different, a tough scramble up the near-vertical face of the Barranco Wall (also known as the ‘Breakfast Wall,’ as the climb is straight after your breakfast!). At the top, you enjoy spectacular views of the Heim Glacier, before we begin to gradually descend to the gully below, and into the cold, beautiful Karanga Valley.
Next, we continue by climbing up a steep series of zig-zags until we reach Karanga Camp where we will lunch. After leaving Karanga, today’s stage continues steadily upwards, passing through barren, rocky landscape, with the Decken and Kersten glaciers visible away to your left.

Day 6
Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp
Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Camp
Summit day on Kilimanjaro is undoubtedly the most challenging part of the climb, but it also offers the ultimate reward: reaching the peak. The journey begins with an early wake-up at 11:00 PM, followed by tea and biscuits at 11:30 PM before starting the climb at midnight. The first stretch is a tough ascent from Barafu Camp (4556 meters) to Stella Point (5756 meters), which involves walking on scree, making it more difficult.
From Stella Point, it's still another 139 meters to the summit, a 45-minute walk to the top at 5895 meters. The goal is to reach the summit around 7:00 AM to celebrate, take photos, and enjoy the remarkable achievement of standing at the highest point in Africa. After reaching the summit, the descent back to Barafu Camp (4556 meters) is necessary for rest, brunch, and a short break.

Mweka Camp - Mweka Gate – Moshi
After celebrating your summit achievement, breakfast is at 7:00 AM, followed by the ‘Tipping Celebration’ at 8:00 AM to reward your trekking team. At 9:00 AM, you'll begin the 9 km descent to Mweka Gate (1640 meters). Upon arrival, a cooked lunch will be served at midday, and you'll receive your well-earned certificate. Your transport will be waiting to take you back to Moshi, where you can relax or celebrate if you have the energy left.
