Karanga Camp (3963) to Barafu Camp (4640m)
After a restful night and a nourishing breakfast, we begin the challenging trek towards Barafu Camp, located at an altitude of 4,640 meters (15,223 feet). The morning air is crisp, and the landscape around us is barren, dominated by vast stretches of scree slopes with no vegetation in sight. The path ahead is steep, with the ground beneath us loose and unstable, requiring careful steps to avoid slipping. The absence of plant life gives the environment a stark, otherworldly feel as we make our way up.
After approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) of climbing, we arrive at Barafu Camp, our stopping point for the day. The camp, situated in a rugged, exposed area, offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, but it is not a place for leisurely enjoyment. The atmosphere here is one of preparation. We take time to eat, refuel, and ensure we’re in the best possible shape for the night ahead. As we rest in the camp, the cold.

Barafu Camp (4640m) to UHuru Peak (5895m) & down to Millennium Camp (3790m)
We begin our final ascent at around midnight, stepping out into the cold, starry night, ready to tackle the steep climb to the summit glaciers. The path is primarily scree, loose and challenging, but over the course of 4 to 5 hours, we gain significant altitude. The effort is tough as the thin air makes breathing harder, but the stunning views keep us motivated. As we climb, the icy cliffs of the crater begin to emerge, creating a surreal and beautiful landscape. After hours of steady progress, we reach Stella Point (5739m) just as the first rays of sunlight touch the horizon, casting a golden glow on the surrounding glaciers and the jagged Mawenzi Peak in the distance. It’s a moment of pure awe.
After a brief rest, we begin our descent, returning to Stella Point and then carefully descending on the scree slopes. We reach Barafu Camp for breakfast, then continue to Millennium Camp for a long, well-earned rest.

Trek Millennium Camp (3790m) to Mweka Gate (1630m)
After the intense days of trekking and summiting Mount Kilimanjaro, the final day of our journey is a gentler one. We begin with a calm trek through the lush rain forest, surrounded by dense vegetation and the sounds of the vibrant ecosystem. The path is soft beneath our feet, and the air is warmer as we descend from the higher altitudes. The forest provides a stark contrast to the barren landscapes we encountered on our ascent, with moss-covered trees, ferns, and exotic plants filling the scenery. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene, allowing us to reflect on the journey that has brought us to this point.
As we continue down, the air becomes thicker, and we start to feel the weight of our accomplishment. The trail is still fairly steep, but the gentle slope makes it easier to navigate. After several hours of descending, we finally reach Mweka Gate the official exit point of our trek. Here, we complete the final park formalities signing out and receiving our hard-earned certificates.
