Barranco Camp (3960m) to Karanga Camp (3963m)

Our day begins with a descent into the Great Barranco, a vast and dramatic ravine, where we’ll then start our ascent up the Great Barranco Wall. This wall separates us from the southeastern slopes of Kibo and presents a non-technical but long and tiring climb over rocky terrain. As we ascend, we’ll pass beneath the stunning Heim and Kersten glaciers, giving us a close-up view of these icy giants.

Once we’ve conquered the Barranco Wall, we’ll head towards the Karanga Valley, a beautiful, remote area that will mark the start of our next challenge: a steep climb up from the valley to our camp for the night at Karanga Camp, situated at 3,963 meters (13,000 feet). The camp is surrounded by rugged terrain and offers a peaceful setting for the evening.

For those feeling strong and energized, we will offer an acclimatization trek in the afternoon, taking you up to around 4,200 meters (13,780 feet) before descending back to Karanga Camp to rest and prepare for the next day.

The route takes us across barren scree slopes, with no vegetation in sight, creating a stark, desert-like environment. The climb is steep and challenging, made even more difficult by the thinning air at this altitude. It will require steady determination and patience as we ascend toward our next base camp.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, we’ll enjoy a well-deserved meal and take the rest of the afternoon to rest and prepare for the big challenge ahead. This is an important time to hydrate and keep warm, as we’ll need our energy for the long night and the summit push that awaits us.

We’ll have an early dinner, allowing time for our bodies to rest and recover. It’s essential to try and get some sleep, even though the excitement and anticipation will be high. We will be waking up around 11:00 PM to 12:00 AM to begin the climb to the summit.
