Day 1
Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2514 meters)
Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut (2514 meters)
Your journey begins at Momella Gate, the official entry point to Arusha National Park. As you step into the park, the adventure kicks off with a scenic hike through lush rainforests, a haven for diverse wildlife. The path meanders through dense vegetation, where you'll have the chance to encounter various animals, including graceful giraffes, elusive buffaloes, and a variety of colorful bird species. The sounds of nature surround you as you trek deeper into the forest, offering a serene and immersive experience.
As you ascend steadily, the trail gradually transitions from the dense forest to open areas with panoramic views of the park’s expansive landscapes. The route is well-marked, making it easy to follow, and along the way, you'll encounter awe-inspiring views of the forest canopy, rolling hills, and distant valleys. The climb is moderate but steady, giving you time to appreciate the beauty of the park while gradually acclimatizing to the increasing altitude.

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3570 meters)
Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut (3570 meters)
The second day involves a steeper ascent to Saddle Hut, which lies just below the summit of Mount Meru. As you move higher, the terrain becomes more rugged and rocky. Along the way, you’ll pass through moorland, with stunning views of the crater floor and the cliffs of the mountain.
The highlight of this day is the view of the Meru Crater, which is a massive volcanic caldera formed during the mountain’s eruption centuries ago. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you approach the saddle, providing striking contrast to the dense forest of the lower slopes.
Once at Saddle Hut, you’ll have a chance to relax and prepare for the summit attempt. The altitude can start to affect some climbers, so it's important to stay hydrated and take it slow.

Summit Attempt (4566 meters) and Descent to Momella Gate
Summit Attempt (Morning): The third day is the most challenging, as you begin your ascent to the summit of Mount Meru, Rim of the Crater. You’ll start early in the morning, usually around 2:00 AM, to make it to the summit before sunrise.
The climb to the summit involves a mix of rocky paths, steep ascents, and breathtaking scenery. As you near the summit, you'll pass through the little Meru point and the last section, which involves some scrambling (hands-on climbing). Once at the summit, you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of the crater, the surrounding landscapes, and a glimpse of Mount Kilimanjaro to the south.
Descent (Afternoon): After spending some time at the summit for photos and resting, you begin your descent back down to Saddle Hut for a quick break. From there, you continue down the mountain to Miriakamba Hut, where you will rest for a few minutes before completing the descent to Momella Gate, where the hike concludes.
