Chimpanzees - Up close and personal

My trip to Gombe National Park was a dream come true and even then, exceeded my expectations. A longtime fan of Jane Goodall's work, I was overjoyed to be in the very park where she and many others worked and lived with the Chimpanzee community. The luxury tented camp at the park is just that - a luxury with running water, toilet and shower as well as a full bed and couch all on a raised platform right off Lake Tanganyika's beach. My park guide was very knowledgeable about the Chimpanzees but also about other local fauna and flora, including traditionally used and medicinal plants that abound in Gombe forest. Two well-experienced chimp trackers worked over radio to locate the troops for viewing and I was lucky enough to spend time with two separate chimp families. One curious chimp came quite close! The experience of Gombe is unforgettable and well worth the trip.

you can only reach the park by the boat journey, so there is no mass tourism there. it's a demanding climb to get to the places, where the chimpanzees can be spotted, so it has an authentic feel.

Just a feedback. Your map of Gombe National Park on this website is completely wrong. It includes the site of Gombe Forest Lodge and the Kasekela tourist area, but the park boundary is utterly wrong it includes land east of the mountain ridge and beyond the road (wrong in both respects) and it misses-out all the valleys south of Kasekela until the park boundary just before Kazinga. I suggest you re-draw it please.

The wonders available at Gombe are unique compared to Serengeti and Tarangire.

Gombe is beautiful, the scenery and waterfall very picturesque. If going, please know that the chimps do migrate and follow the food source. For example, when there in April, the chimps are at the top of the mountain. The hike is very strenuous and takes several hours. At other times of the year, the chimps are much lower in the mountains. The guides live and work there and are very knowledgeable. We were not able to see the chimps. But, visiting Jane Goodall's research center was very interesting.

We were greeted by a whole Chimp family at the entrance of Gombe Stream, its was amazing, we also saw many baboons and other beautiful animals. In the evening we could watch a film about Jane Godall's first research and time there and talk to local stuff. Their meal was nice!
