Enjoying a great park on a budget

We visited Hwange in December which is a little far into the rainy season to see the most animals. The best time to visit is in September when the water holes are great places to spot the wide range of animals in the park.
We stayed in the rustic National Parks cottages which, even in the middle of shortages that were affecting Zimbabwe, were great places to stay and very cost-effective.
We did not have a 4x4 but found there to be ample routes around the park for a normal 2 wheel drive car. We saw a wide selection of antelope, giraffe, cheetah and zebra. We were sad to miss out on the elephants but they had disappeared off into the bush because of the rains. We also got great views of the Black Rhino at the nearby Hwange Safari Lodge.
When we were not self-driving, we went on some excellent guided drives with extremely knowledgeable local guides.
At that time of year, the birding was excellent and could fill in the periods when the larger game was not visible.

Plenty of elephants, buffaloes, antelopes. Water pumps were working thanks to private initiative!

I went on a 5-day safari in Zimbabwe and had an incredible experience!
Hwange National Park offers an excellent structure with very expert guides (my guide on Game Drive was Talks and he is incredible!), fascinating scenery with a variety of surprising wild animals. I saw lions, elephants, zebras, antelopes, pumbas, monkeys and different birds. Always respecting and appreciating nature freely - the most important part of a safari.
My guide for the entire tour was Muza and he offered valuable tips and guidance throughout the itinerary.
I strongly recommend!!!

We were lucky enough on our first game drive, to be able to follow a lion as it tracked, caught, and killed an injured baby buffalo. Also, there were not very many jeeps underway at the Park, so we often had the feeling that we had the Park to ourselves. Even during the lion kill, there were only a maximum of about 5 jeeps there, all distanced far enough apart that everyone could see but it wasn't crowded. It didn't feel at all like an assembly line game drive, which is a feeling I have had at some of the really well-known game parks in Africa, where there can be a big line of jeeps waiting to see something and no jeep can stay and watch for very long. During our game drives at Hwange, we could take our time looking and photographing.
