The Khwai Concession (which covers the NG18 and NG19 concessions) is an extension of the Okavango Delta and experiences similar weather. It has a warm to hot climate, with distinct Dry (April to October) and Wet (November to March) seasons. The rains most often arrive in November, although the exact timing can be unpredictable, and offer relief from the often stifling heat of October. The last rains of the Wet season usually fall in April.

Dry Season April to October

The coolest months of the year are June and July. Temperatures start to rise around August with a peak in October. In the middle of the Dry season, you’ll need warm clothing for early morning game drives and boat trips, as well as most evenings.

  • April & May – During the start of the Dry season, the landscapes of Khwai are wonderfully green and water levels can be quite high and rising. Expect fine and mostly dry weather with average daytime maximums of around 31°C/88°F.
  • June, July & August – These months are the heart of the Dry season when rain is rare and yet water levels are at their highest. You can expect fairly cool conditions in the evenings and early mornings (around 11°C/52°F). Afternoon temperatures hover around 26°C/79°F.
  • September & October – Temperatures become progressively warmer in the buildup to the rains that mark the end of the Dry season. October can be unpleasantly hot, with average daytime temperatures of 34°C/93°F, but evenings and early mornings are generally agreeable.

Wet Season November to March

Rains usually arrive in November. This cools everything down and settles the dust. The rain most often appears as afternoon thunderstorms and brief showers become normal. It remains warm throughout the Wet season, with average afternoon temperatures of around 34°C/93°F. Mornings are pleasant and a good time to be out and about.

  • November & December – Rains rarely last longer than occasional showers and thunderstorms, and conditions remain hot and sunny between storms. Early mornings are very pleasant with average temperatures about 20°C/68°F.
  • January & February – This is when you can expect the most rainfall, with afternoon rains for a few hours most days. Powerful storms are common, especially in the afternoons.
  • March – The rains begin to ease, until there’s not much more than a storm every couple of days. As always, mornings are cooler, with an average of 17°C/63°F.
