Safety

The Khwai Concession, which consists of the NG18 and NG19 concessions, is very safe to visit in our opinion. This is certainly true if you’re traveling on a guided tour (by road or flights).

Crime is rare in Botswana, so it’s a popular and safe self-drive destination. However, as the Khwai Concession is quite remote, careful trip planning regarding the route and supplies is essential.

For up-to-date information about safety in Botswana, check the government travel advisories (see the ‘Governments’ Travel Advice for Botswana’ link below).

Malaria & Vaccinations

The Khwai Concession lies in a high-risk malaria zone, and it is advisable to take antimalarial medication. Extra safety measures include applying insect repellent (containing at least 30% DEET) and wearing long sleeves and trousers in the evening to cover up any exposed skin. Several vaccinations might be required before coming to Botswana. Your travel clinic or local doctor will advise on your specific needs.

Wildlife Viewing

Wildlife viewing is generally very safe. When on an organized safari, always follow the instructions of your guide. On a self-drive safari, it is essential to stay in your car, unless you are in clearly marked areas where it is okay to get out of your vehicle. Please note that most campsites in the Khwai area are unfenced.
