Lower Zambezi National Park

The mighty Zambezi river, fourth largest in Africa and home of the mysterious river God, Nyami-Nyami, is the show piece of this remote National Park. The flood plain offers the best game viewing on land, while a boat cruise on the Zambezi, visiting some of the islands, is a wonderful experience.

We took a 4 day canoe trip down the Zambezi River to Lower Zambezi National Park. It was a wild, amazing bush experience down a river filled with crocs, hippos, elephants, and jaw-dropping scenery.

Lower Zambezi is a great national park. Right on the Zambezi river, a favorite activity is Tiger fishing. I have stayed inside and outside the park. I recommend Kenyemba Lodge. It has a private island with game viewing opportunity, and is a short drive from the national park. It also has great food, and, located right on the river, is excellent for fishing.

Canoeing the Zambezi is a dream fulfilled.

We paddled the Zambezi on an 8 day 7 night canoe safari. The wildlife sightings are non-stop as you constantly pass through areas rich in hippos, crocodiles, rich bird life and elephants. Giraffes, lions, baboons, kudu, and more were spotted also during our trip, which we shall treasure a lifetime.

The roads, accommodations and guide service are all excellent in Zambia. Travelling from Lusaka to the area of the park is straightforward and easy.

Our guides on the trip were incredibly familiar with the area and were gracious hosts and ambassadors to their park. Zambia will greet you with a smile, and you will have a smile on your face when you depart as well.

Can only improve with time (review from 2004)

It's an adventure just getting to Lower Zambezi National Park. You must cross the Kafue River on a hand-winched punt and in some places the road and bridges are washed away (floods in 2003). A highlight was the community campsite just outside the park, which was in a wonderful location to relax on the banks of the Zambezi. It was wonderful watching the full moon rise over that great river with the hippos grusting nearby.The sunrise through the door of the tent, just meters above the river was great as well as was the visited by an inquisitive elephant, which Philip the campsite manager expertly dealt with when it got too close. To get into the Park you drive through a river, which can be tricky if the water is high. In 2004 the animals were quite wild and ran from cars on the west side of the park. Further in, near the more expensive lodges, it may not be the case, but it seemed that there must have been poaching going on. Over time hopefully things will improve and Lower Zambezi National Park will be more accessible. It would be great to visit again.

Beautiful Wild Free Ranging Animals - Magnificent Sunsets and River Scenery

From the comfort of the river, one can see Hippos [X], Elephants [X], BIRDS [X], Monkeys [X]. Of course, be sure to go to Victoria Falls too! Lovely Dinner Sunset Cruise (took it twice). Enjoyable Elephant Ride.There's ultralight gliding, white water rafting, and the Livingstone Museum.

Bring mosquito repellent. I was there in June/July and the mozzies came out at dusk.
