Premier Safari Experience in the World
Overall rating
5/5

When it comes to African safari's, there is just no comparison to the Masai Mara/Serengeti. This region is home to one of the last remaining expansive wild frontiers with herds of game animals in the millions and a combined territory of thousands of km of untouched natural bush. The variety of game animals is unmatched, all the Big 5 can be viewed in a single day, birds, crocodiles, the annual migration... Furthermore, the cultural aspect of being in traditional Masai territory and being exposed to the Masai people and way of life adds another element of interest to the whole experience. This park is certainly not a secret, however due to the expansive size and the abundance of game life, it doesnt ever feel crowded or like a large zoo, how some smaller fenced in game parks can feel. The sense of adventure from driving across the expansive plains, through rivers and viewing unique animal interactions is unmatched.

Returned to the Mara with my wife and four children after working in Kenya 21 yeara ago. We wanted to share our amazing experience all that time ago with our kids and the Mara certainly did not disappoint. Despite not seeing all of the Big 5 this time around we did get to see some fantastic animals up close. These included a mother with 3 baby cheetahs and 3 lion brothers stalking a herd of zebra. The undoubted highlight was a balloon safari over the savannah with Hot Air Safaris. This took off early so we could see the sun rise over Tanzania and Andrew the Captain managed to guide the balloon over a larg herd of startled elephants. Upon landing the 16 passengers were treated to the most amazing Champagne breakfast on the plain under the shade of a tree. We stayed at Ilkiliani Camp and were spoilt rotten by the staff there as the tourist numbers were down due to negative media reports regarding ebola and terrorism. Don't let this put you off going to this most wonderful place on earth which is far away from all the reported incidents. These are having an unnecessary detrimental impact on the wonderful people of this unmissable country.

Exciting AND Beautiful!

The Masai Mara was amazing. Our guide was determined to find all the wildlife he could so he drove us many miles out. It felt very remote and special. We saw animals and birds I had never seen before and they were gorgeous. All the animals seemed to be in their natural habitat...even elephants climbing mountains??? My favorite were the giraffe. You could see them off amongst the trees with their heads sticking up high. We also saw a huge group of them just off the road. We saw many animals so up close it was crazy from our open top vehicle. Great views for great picture taking.

It was also very special to be able to see the local tribes people. They were in their native clothes, of course, and we could see their homes and small communities very nearby. We saw many natives from Masai warriors to Masai women who make beautiful trinkets for tourists. They're a bargain, great memorabilia and easy to pack.

A Safari of a lifetime

At Maasai Mara we were able to see the Big Five in their natural setting-- we saw new life as an antelope gave birth in our presence, we saw a lion eating a wilderbeest, we witnessed the crossing at the Mara river. The weather was very nice hence we were able to do the game drive without problems. We used the Sopa lodge which was very clean with good food and evening entertainment by the local Masai who did a traditional dance. We also visited a Masai village and learned about their way of live. Our Tour guide, George of CKC Tours acted as an excellent tour guide who made us to appreciate what Masai Mara had to offer. In Mount Kenya we slept at the Serena Mountain lodge which is very beautiful and you could watch the animals from the balcony of your room as they lick salt and drink water. In Lake Nakuru we saw many animals but the most outstanding feature were the Flamingoes-- beautiful birds

First Stop on our Safari and we saw it all!

The Masai Mara reserve was the very first park we went to on our two week safari and it was more than we could have imagined! Although we were prepared to have to be patient and pace our sightings throughout the trip. We saw 4 of the big 5 animals on our first game drive! Whether it was an early morning, evening, or day time drive, we continued seeing amazing animals including: giraffes, wildebeest, gazelles, zebras, lions, and even baby leopards. The views were everything we wanted and to top it off, we visited with the Masai tribe. This was a once in a lifetime experience.
