Beatiful Park but watch out for corruption

We flew into Masai Mara and were held up for some time from entering the park as the agents said the network was down and they could not verify our pre-paid fees. When our guides refused to pay the bribe the network suddenly was back up and we were allowed entry. Almost immediately upon entry we were pulled over by a "ranger" who stated we had driven in an area where we should not have. Even though there were at least 7 other vehichles doing the same thing and one that was still stuck in mud, we were the only ones stopped. Our guide was threatened that we could lose our access to the park for the entire time we were to be there (2 days). In the end our guide paid the bribe and we were on our way. I stongly suspect that the officals at the airport contacted the ranger to extract our "Fee" since we hadn't paid the bribe at the airport.

We stayed in 3 other parks and never saw anything close to this corruption. It made us not feel safe in this park. While the park itself was amazing I would not go back to this park and would advise anyone wanting to visit Masai Mara to reconsider or just know that there will be "Fees" to pay.

Fascinating area, where you can see the Maasi people living their normal lives. The picnic under the Acacia trees was a real highlight and the wildlife you see in this vast open park is incredible.

We saw the famed Big Six of Africa, but also, a family of ducks, a hippo alone in a water hole, a leopard trotting across grassland, the famed Mara River with its crocs and hippos and the landscape takes your breath away. We didn't expect to be fascinated by the variety of birds, by they proved to be an unexpected highlight

Masai Mara is a superb safari destination. It's large expanses are home to plenty of wildlife. Driving through it is definitely back-country, with mostly off road trails. There are very few improved "roads" in the reserve, so it has a bush vibe. You can feel that you're in the wilderness, and not just a mile off the nearest highway. Most of the transportation time within the park is spent 4-wheel driving through the many trails which generally allow close-up viewing of the animals.

Masai Mara was by far the best park to visit on our trip. The park is rather flat, making it easy to leave paths at times; to see some special animals. Lots of lions, elephants, zebras, antilope etc. A great park where one can truly see so much. Definitely recommend this park to anyone going for the first time, but even if you're an avid safari-goer, this park is a beautiful landscape.
