My wife and I visited Ngorongoro Crater in the summer of 2017 and had an amazing time. Our stop here was part of a larger, week-long safari throughout Tanzania so our time was somewhat limited, but our first day began with beautiful panoramic views of the crater from above before later driving into the crater for a day of wildlife viewing. The vastness of the crater kept things from ever feeling crowded, and we enjoyed seeing a variety of animals including lions, giraffe, hippos, hyenas, wildebeest, gazelles and much more. Watching the sun go down as we drove out made for one of the best views during our time in Africa.

On our second day, we did a guided hike to Olmoti crater with a park ranger. While the terrain was somewhat steep, the views at the top were well worth it and we would highly recommend this trip as a nice alternative to driving around all day. Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable, and gave us lots of facts about the local area and animals.

Overall, our time in the Nogrongoro crater area was fantastic, and I wouldn't hesitate to return on a future trip to Africa or Tanzania.

An amazing wonder of Africa, you should see it for yourself! Lions and hyenas are very common, but seeing the black rhino is not guaranteed. There is no leopard and cheetah in the crater.
The scenery is what makes this probably the best park in the Northern circuit, and the abundance of water that supports great numbers of herbivores.

Beautiful location.
A lot of animals, they don't seem to care for cars and tourists with cameras.
We have seen many three lion families, an elephant, rhino and many more.
A lot of safari cars there.

We did not see all the big-5 but are happy with what we saw. Very scenic and the whole place with its unpaved roads has been kept as pristine as possible. Tanzania has done a superb job in maintaining these national treasures.

This sanctuary of wildlife is untouched my much of modern man's hands. You can experience natural Africa as it has existed for centuries. It is quiet, serene, a true window on the African circle of life. No shops, no people, no footprints. Just wildlife like it is without us intruding. Even the very early drive in to the crater took us through 20 minutes of mist and fog, to emerge in this magical cauldron. The images live in my mind still …

Early arrival in the crater allowed us to see and photograph lions attempting to bring down a Cape buffalo. The buff escaped when his herd came back to help out.
