Wonderful mini-vacation in Samburu!

My husband contacted Winnie at Flight and Safaris to arrange a long weekend trip for us to Samburu National Park. We live in Kenya and already know Flight and Safari because they provide a driver for us during weekdays. Winnie set up a visit at a great lodge (Intrepid Camp), with two outings every day. The lodge was beautiful, the food was very good, the tents were comfortable and the staff was a ... Read morettentive. Johnathon was our driver on this trip. He is extremely knowledgeable about the animals, the Kenyan parks, and the culture. He has an excellent eye for spotting game, and a great sense of humor, and he is a safe driver on top of it all. During our weekend in Samburu saw all of the "Samburu Five" (reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, oryx and the gerenuk, a long-necked antelope that feeds by standing on its hind legs) not to mention numerous elephants, lions, cheetahs, and a leopard. We had a wonderful time, and definitely recommend Flight and Safari.

For us this trip was very important, we have a job with normal salary and Kenya and Tanzania is very expensive for us.. We were going saving enough time.
The first day we pay all money, 3000$ for 16 days and half. Land Rover Defender with roof tent and camping equipment.
We take the vehicle in Nairobi.
They gave us the damaged vehicle.
We warn the same day that the turbo charger was not work ... Read moreing.
For the highway the car was going very very slowly.
Neither the air conditioning was going. We were in time of great heat and we spent it very badly.
The first day in Ngare Ndare there came a few mechanics to be looked of arranging it, but not at all.
We could come to Samburu but they were following the problems.
In Nakuru one day we were in two workshops and on the following day in three. Was fustrating….

Finally, after several discussions, Winny said us that she was obtaining a van for take us to Masai Mara and there they would bring to us the Defender two days later, arranged. Windy say : Am paying for 3 days from today.and paying the driver. You will only pay for fuel and park fee for the car.
They brought to us a horrible van, without air, without usb to load mobiles and cameras, with the most uncomfortable seats, with the battered lights, and the driver with expired license as said to us a police officer who stopped us on the following day.

Well, the next day to arrive to Mara suprise !! the driver say us that he must to go away the next day, because his chief had not given him any more money.
We call to flight and safaris and Windy did not make sure us either that they were going to bring to us the vehicle.
We turned to Nairobi ready to speak with Windy.

And when we think that they returned all money because we had problems with the vehicle since the first day… no, they only return us a part..
Incredible… We pay for 3 days land rover damaged, 3 days 140 $ day for a horrible van..150$ for a cross border documentation when we dont cross any border, and one night at Mara Sidai camp.

Well, after that, we had other problems because we were not finding other companies that were renting a car to us, there were holidays, etc, etc… but this is another history, jajajaja

I have whatsapps, pictures, bills, etc…

Our experience was very very bad.

In a way it is strange that you preferred to write a bad comment on this social media platform while we gave you full attention from the onset till when you decided to cancel the trip. You advised that you could reach Nakuru the nearest major town. From Nakuru we agreed that we get you another option temporarily, being this was Peak Season all our vehicles were out on hire. Thus we looked for an alternative vehicle so that you do not lose the days you had planned on having the safari in Masai Mara. When we talked, you told us that your had planned to go to Masai Mara for 3 Days. Being you were on a Self drive Camping Safari and the 2nd sub hire vehicle was not a Camper car, but a normal Safari Tour Van which we had to sub let from a different company within the town you were in to save on time as well. We decided to incur further costs and paid for you 2 Nights Full board accommodations in Masai Mara for the 3 days in Mara. Before we proceeded with the payment we were all in agreement. Only for you to decide to terminate the hire the following day. This caused us losses coz the Hotel we had paid for, was non refundable and also we had paid the 3 days for the sub hired vehicle.
Since then we replaced all the plugs and the vehicle is now good, as mechanical issues are beyond our control and happens to all vehicles.
Unfortunately we feel sad that after all the special attentions that were given to you during the hire and refund done for the remaining days upon you terminating of the contract Further on your return you even sent us a nice email with your account details to send you the balance of USD 100.00 Which we did send, and upon receiving the swift. You decide to tarnish our name. We regret this unfortunate experience but we would like it known that we did our best as a company and went extra mile to get you alternative means and accommodation and it is you who terminated the contract with us, and we came to a mutual agreement and we made the refund as per our agreement in the office. Our policy is our clients to always become friends and NOT just tourist.

Attentive and friendly operations made for a fantastic safari

I am mid-50s American male making my first trip to Kenya and on safari. I was traveling home on some much anticipated R&R from my job in the Middle East, and decided to treat myself to a few days to relax en route home.

I had no real idea what lay before me, but I packed for all sorts of contingencies, most of which never even came to consciousness while on my trip with Flights and Safaris.

I had decided on an itinerary covering 4 nights and 5 days, covering Amboseli NP, Lake Naivasha (and nearby Hell's Gate NP), and Masai Mara. My dates on safari were Monday, 4 December to Friday, 8 December.

I was interested in rustic camps to include those within some of the protected reserves, but as I sleep with the aid of a CPAP (positive air pressure) machine, and the camps generally turn off their generators at night, I would have been miserable and sleepless. So, I researched the lodges, and asked Flights and Safari to provide me a quote for staying where I could avail myself of a good night's sleep. My costs went up from the camping level, but I thought it still affordable. And the food, 3-meals a day, was surprisingly good and better quality than expected.

Robert, my driver and guide, arrived promptly at my downtown Nairobi hotel on the morning of our start, and took me by the offices to complete payment, and secure the luggage I was leaving at their office while out of the city. I was surprised (and elated) to find I was the only person going on our trip, so, poor Robert, he was answering my questions for a full 5-days, as I had him all to myself.

Robert was very patient, knowledgeable, funny, and had a very good eye. I can write that he located not one, but two (2) leopards during our time at Masai Mara, which made for a very rare experience within his past tours. He amazed me with picking a large owl out hidden high in a tree from at least a 100m distance. He has been touring Kenya as a driver/guide for 12 years, and I can't recommend him highly enough here.

For those looking for details, I will try to provide those herewith.

The drive from Nairobi to Amboseli took us perhaps 4-5 hours. The traffic on the main route between Nairobi and Mombasa was quite heavy, but once we left the main road, we had open roads.

Upon arrival at the AA Lodge just on the outskirts of Amboseli National Park, I was shown to my cabin, and then to the restaurant for a delicious and well-catered lunch. (The AA Lodge was a very beautiful place, ideal for a couple's getaway, and I wished I'd had my companion and more time just to relax and enjoy the fauna, the pool, the sunshine, and for a clear glimpse of Mt Kilimanjaro's peak. Surprisingly, the first week of December, the customers seemed to be me, Robert, and a young French couple. It was otherwise deserted.) I stalked some baboons hanging around one of the elevated water tanks, went for a leisurely swim, and relaxed until our 1500 departure for the park and my first game drive.

Amboseli did not disappoint (though the clouds on Kilimanjaro persisted, denying me a view of the peak throughout my stay) with baboon, impala, zebra, ostrich, 2 male juvenile elephants, and a female giraffe and her baby all visible within the first 5 minutes following entry to the park. From there, it only got better, with encounters with many elephants, and sightings of all varieties of birds, African buffalo, hippos, gazelle, impala, waterbuck, and even a rare sighting of a female hyena and three juveniles egressing an in-ground den in daylight. We spotted and watched a male lion from a distance, and his 4-5 female harem laying in a group taking in the afternoon sun, totally impervious to our presence. We lingered there watching the lions for probably 30 minutes, with the only sound hear at all being that of the idling or starting of engines on passing or departing safari vehicles. The quiet was amazing.

Robert timed our return perfectly, as we passed out of the gate right at dusk, returning to our lodge for dinner and sleep.

The next day was a long day in the vehicle returning via Nairobi and then heading West to the Great Rift. It probably took us 7 hours to get through heavy traffic and down the steep Rift road to Lake Naivasha. After settling in there, Robert kindly took me to Hell's Gate, and then retrieved me from my bicycling ordeal again at dusk. The following morning he had me to the Lakeside for another private ride, this time in a boat out on the lake for about an hour.

We drove that late morning to Masai Mara, and after a delightfully hard shower, we took a long drive into the reserve.

Again, on Thursday, as I had opted out of the usual visit to a Masai village (or mock-up thereof, designed to sell local craft products) and the balloon ride, Robert kindly had arranged a picnic lunch, and we took an all-day drive through Masai Mara reserve.

Friday was a long drive back up the Rift road, and into Nairobi, where we arrived in mid-afternoon. After a stop off at the office to collect my luggage, he had me deposited at Jomo Kenyatta Airport before 5pm, for my late evening flight out to Europe.

Robert was great; the itinerary worked very well for me, and he was generous in sharing his binoculars with me. The front office was prompt in their communications with me, and flexible in meeting my wishes.

Only one critiques to offer- The AA Lodge at Masai Mara does not provide electricity at night, which I had stipulated as a necessity for lodge bookings, so I did not sleep well.

For my own part, I would suggest that visiting Hell's Gate in late afternoon was not well advised (it was my suggestion) and the visit was curtailed due to darkness. I would have done the boat ride on the lake at that time, and tried Hell's Gate the next morning before our trip to Masai Mara.

Flight and Safaris, and the Kenyan wildlife, provided an excellent, wonderful, memory-filled adventure, and worked well with me in designing my itinerary. The vehicle was reliable, Robert was a fount of knowledge (and patience), the vehicle was clean, safe, well-maintained, and spacious (when there is only one passenger!)

The lodges were all clean, comfortable (no a/c, and wishes for electric fans to move air in the night should be requested, in advance, or upon arrival), and spacious. I stayed at the AA Lodge in Amboseli and Masai Mara, and the unbeatable Sopa Mara lodge in Lake Naivasha.

I contacted Winnie to hire a car, and we finished up with a Hilux camper for four memorable days. The truck was great, from speed bumps and potholes on the main road to the worst of outback Kenyan tracks. The tent is easy to put up, takes a couple of minutes, and gives you a feeling of security that a hippo cannot sit on you in the middle of the night. All the kit- stove, pots, plates, cutlery, e ... The experience was memorable. Flights and Safaris were truly professional in their approach. The safari was money's worth. The driver was extremely good.

Scope for improvement : Accommodation in Nairobi was not money's worth. This should be included int he package. Food and restaurant service in Mara Sopa Lodge to be improved.

Otherwise everything was absolutely fine.

My driver/guide was phenomenal. He was knowledgeable, dependable, always on time, very kind, and made for a great companion while we traveled together. It was amazing how much he knew about Kenya, the wildlife, and he was VERY good at spotting animals while on safari. I would not have seen most of the cool things we saw without his good eye.

Thanks to Flight Safaris for a wonderful holiday! I will certainly be calling if I find myself planning another trip to Kenya!
