Company Profile

Time + Tide Africa is the affiliation of Norman Carr Safaris, Chongwe Safaris and Miavana on Nosy Ankao. With ten camps in Zambia and one in Madagascar as well as over 90 years of experience, we have a unique portfolio and amazing journeys to offer our guests.

Our journeys blend the abundant wildlife of Zambia’s South Luangwa valley with the raw adventure of the Lower Zambezi waterscapes as well as the mass migration of Zambia’s Liuwa Plain National Park. In time to come, you will have the opportunity to discover the diversity of colourful marine life on a hidden private island in Madagascar’s Nosy Ankao archipelago.

Our long-standing conservation and community partnerships benefit directly from every booking. In choosing a Time + Tide journey, destination or experience, you are helping to secure the future of these irreplaceable wild places. Please read more about the companies and destinations below.

Norman Carr Safaris
is the oldest safari company in Zambia and widely recognized as one of the foremost safari operators in the country. Norman Carr pioneered walking safaris and has created a tradition we are proud to continue both on foot and by open vehicle. Norman Carr established Luangwa's first safari camp in 1950. Back in the days when an African safari was a hunting experience, Norman developed the pioneering idea of taking people to look at animals and photograph them rather than to shoot them.

This first safari camp was set up in partnership with the then Paramount Chief Nsefu and his people. This idea of involving the local people in the management of the wildlife was way ahead of its time. It was almost 50 years later that conservationists started developing the principles of "Community Based Natural Resource Management", in other words encouraging the traditional owners of the natural resource to take responsibility for its usage. Norman Carr's pioneering approach proved to be the forerunner to a cornerstone of modern day conservation policy.

Everyone associated with Norman Carr Safaris (NCS) is immensely proud of the heritage of the company. The principles of conservation and community responsibility established by Norman over half a century ago still run strongly through the company. We have been leading the way in responsible tourism in Zambia for over 60 years and we intend for that to continue.

In early 2012 we announced our new partners – the Dalais family and Chongwe Safaris in the Lower Zambezi – who along with co-owner and Director Dave Wilson are pleased to share the next chapter of the Norman Carr Safaris adventure.

Throughout its history, NCS has always innovated; the first community based tourism, the first camps, the first walking safaris, the first community projects, the first luxury bush camps, the first all Zambian expert guiding team, the first Zambian female guide, the first majority Zambian Operations Board - the list of firsts is long! We’re proud to continue this tradition and will continue to lead the way in innovation, the use of new ‘green’ technology, staff training and development and community involvement. For Norman Carr Safaris, it has always been and continues to be all about CONSERVATION THROUGH TOURISM.

Chongwe Safaris – Lower Zambezi, Zambia

Chongwe Safaris is one of the oldest and most reputable companies in the Lower Zambezi. Established in 1996, we are proud to offer you our award-winning formula of great service in the best location in the Lower Zambezi.

We offer an unmatched variety of activities including day and night drives, boats cruises, walking safaris or our flagship experience, canoeing, which offers you the opportunity to view wildlife from a more natural perspective. The Lower Zambezi is also widely known as one of the best places to catch (and release) a tiger fish or two.

On the confluence of the mighty Zambezi and Chongwe Rivers and opposite the renowned Mana Pools, lies Chongwe River Camp. The eight comfortable standard ensuite tents string along the Chongwe River with wonderful views of the escarpment in the near distance. The tents are complemented by two extravagant and exclusive suites. The suites also boast the luxury of individual butler services and private plunge pools set on the banks of the Chongwe River.

Situated in the middle of the Zambezi River, Tsika Island sits about 30kms upstream from Chongwe River Camp. Accommodation on the island is comprised of three, unassuming chalets and is completely private and exclusive to Chongwe guests.

Chongwe House sits on the serene and breathtaking bank of the river after which it was named. Recently winning the Best Safari House in Africa for the second time in a row, this is award-winning safari design at its finest. Sleeping eight guests in four, vast bedrooms with private ensuite bathrooms, the bedrooms are arranged over two floors and have their own outdoor sitting area. Chongwe River House is fully hosted on a private basis and has its own safari guide and game viewing vehicle, allowing for exclusive activities to be offered to guests.

Kasaka offers an authentic and memorable safari experience set in a natural bush environment with each chalet secluded amongst the native flora. We have two ‘wings’ to the camp - our cultivated side has beautiful manicured gardens and colourful indigenous plants and a natural bush side which is connected to the main lodge by overhead wooden walkways to allow for the passage of wildlife within the camp.

Whether you stay in our Classic Tents, the  Albida or Cassia Suites,  Tsika Island , Kasaka River Lodge,  or our exclusive and private Chongwe River House , we will make sure your stay with us is a real home away from home - a place where you can unwind and switch off from the rest of the world.
