Durban Safari and Tour Destinations information and map.
Durban, KwaZulu-Natal has so much to offer our clients from the majestic Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Mountain range, Zulu Cultural Villages, Durban Big 5 Safari Tours, KwaZulu-Natal Battlefield Historical Tours and much more…
Below is an introduction to the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg, Battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal and the most popular Big 5 Durban Safari Tours that we offer our clients:
Destinations:
Drakensberg: Africa’s highest mountain range south of Kilimanjaro, and the largest and most concentrated series of rock art paintings in Africa – making it a World Heritage site of both natural and cultural significance. Both the Zulu name uKhahlamba (barrier of spears) and the Afrikaans name Drakensberg (dragon mountain) fit the formidable horizon created by the range situated just outside Durban, KwaZulu Natal. A massive basaltic cap set on a broad base of sedimentary rocks belonging to the Stormberg series of 150 million years ago, the mountains are South Africa’s main watershed. For more than 4 000 years they were home to the indigenous San people, who created a vast body of rock art – the largest collection in Africa. “The site’s diversity of habitats protects a high level of endemic and globally threatened species, especially birds and plants.”
Battlefields: Over the years their have been many battles for control over land and people. These Wars in KwaZulu-Natal took place between the British, Boers and Zulus just a few hours outside of Durban. Two of the most famous battles being the Battle of Isandlwana (between the British and the Zulu’s) the Zulu’s annihilating the British and the Battle of Rorke’s Drift (between the British and the Zulu’s) the British annihilating the Zulu Warriors. Both these Battles took place on the same day, 22nd January 1879.
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve: The Africa Bush in South Africa has always drawn people to visit the natural beauty of our country. The Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is the only park under formal conservation in KwaZulu-Natal and where the ‘Big 5′ occur. Hluhluwe Umfolozi game reserve is situated a mere 3 hours from Durban. Established in 1895 and set in the heart of Zululand with nearby St Lucia Reserve otherwise know as Isimangeliso Wetland park (South Africa’s first world heritage site). This is where Zulu kings such as Dingiswayo and Shaka hunted and put in place the first conservation laws. Today, Africa’s ‘Big 5’ the 5 most dangerous animals to hunt on foot(Lion, Elephant, Leopard, Buffalo and Rhinoceros) stalk the flourishing Savannah. Game viewing is the principal attraction in the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve. As the home of Operation Rhino in the 1950s and 60s, the Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game reserve became world renowned for its White Rhino conservation. Other areas of focus for which Hluhluwe Umfolozi Game Reserve is famous include wilderness trails which originated in the Umfolozi section in the 1950s and its renowned Game Capture unit upgraded into the Centenary Capture Centre, a bench mark for animal capture and sustainable utilisation throughout Africa. The Game reserve covers some 96 000 hectares(960 Square Kilometers) and contains an immense diversity of fauna and flora.
