Kafue National Park - A classic African safari destination
Overall rating
4/5

Kafue is Zambia's largest park, and one of the largest in Africa. It encompasses a range of habitats, but is dominated by Miombo woodland and seasonal 'Dambo' Savannah. The wildlife in Kafue remains very prolific. It is extremely good for elephants, and large herds can be seen throughout the year. Other ungulates, including Impala, Eland, Kudu and Puku are also common. Most 'typical' African carnivores (Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Hyena, Wild dog) can be seen in Kafue, although none are particularly common and an element of luck is usually required to spot these. In all, most 'classic' safari species can be seen in Kafue with the exception of Rhinocerous (formerly occured, now extinct) and Giraffe. The birdwatching possibilities in Kafue are excellent, and the Nanzilla plains in the South are one of the few places where the Black-cheeked Lovebird can be observed. Kafue is not a well-visited destination and remains somewhat off the beaten track. Consequently the infrastructure is limited and independent travellers will need to prepare much of what they need for their trip in advance. (Some good accomodation possibilities exist around the parks periphary, although almost nothing is available in the interior). However, the quiet nature of Kafue is also one of its biggest appeals. A visitor can travel large distances without seeing a single other tourist, and will have vast landscapes and abundant African wildlife to themselves. In all, Kafue in something of a challenging safari destination, although will reward adventurous travellers with a classic African landscape which they will be able to enjoy almost entirely to themselves.

Travel in Nairobi, national park & surrounding villages
5/5

Moses was our driver, he was great, very knowledgeable & great weaving in & out of traffic in the crazy traffic jams in Nairobi.
His knowledge of animals at the national park was great & he could spot animals before anyone of us.
Communication was great, he pointed out areas of historical & cultural interest everywhere we went & was very patient with us scots, stopping to allow us photo opportunities on many occasions.

Amazing experience
5/5

I made last minute plans for my trip and was accomodated quickly within my 5 day "planning" process with paul! I was met and picked up and taken to the masai camp area and had a great time with everyone. The highlight of my trip was seeing the children in the masai tribe while visiting their school. I saw so many animals and also visited lake nakuru, and lake naivasha. The driver, jackson was friendly, knowledgeable, and accomodating as well. The price was affordable, for me and i did a total of 5days 4nights with the tour guide. I felt safe throughout the entire trip and enjoyed shopping and seeing all the wonderful treasures that kenya had to offer. I also was able to do the hot air balloon ride and watch the sunrise. There were so many great aspects of my trip i wish i could describe it all. A huge thanks to paul, jackson, jospeh(masai camp, joseph(hot air balloon guide) and everyone that made the trip so wonderful and special to me.

Excellent experience with no hassle made it very easy to book from the U.S. without worry!
5/5

Not only was this a honeymoon trip, but it was also our first trip to Africa so we wanted it to be perfect. We were recommended to East Africa Wild Adventures by a friend and we're so thankful we used them. They were incredibly helpful in setting up the trip and providing suggestions. They were also very knowledgeable and quick to answer questions and make us feel comfortable with the different travel options, which was really important to us since we'd never been to Africa and we were booking the trip from the U.S. They also customized our trip and were able to work with our interests to create a more personal and private experience. Once we arrived in Africa we were taken care of from the time the plane landed to the time we departed. Everything was already arranged so we didn't have to worry about anything which was perfect. We did a private 6 day hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro which is when we really knew that East Africa Wild Adventures uses the best tour guides and really made our trip special. Our guide was really interested in helping us and learning from us, and he spoke perfect English, not just the basics like most of the other guides which made the trip even better because we could joke and understand each other rather than having to translate everything or walk in silence. We met a lot of other tour guides who either didn't really speak English or didn't really want to be there so they weren't as friendly as our guide. Our guide was always smiling and I can honestly say that I would not have made it to the summit without him. After our hike we spent a few days on the beach relaxing at a beautiful all inclusive resort in Zanzibar, where East Africa Wild Adventures arranged for us to get a free honeymoon upgrade. Overall, we had a great experience and would highly recommend using East Africa Wild Adventures as they made everything so easy and we had such a wonderful time.

Simply the best!
5/5

We are still talking about this amazing safari to everyone and anyone who is interested. I must say we have travelled extensively and we always said Alaska was the best trip of our lives, but Botswana out did it. Once again it was brilliant and thank you for all you did for us.

Incredible experience
5/5

Nicholas was ALWAYS available to answer, and assist with, any and all of our questions and concerns! The service we received from him was excellent!

Patrick was a great guide, very informative and easy to understand and travel with. He helped to make those long drives as enjoyable as possible and went out of his way to accommodate o ur needs.

We had a great experience in Kibale and our guide Jessica was fun and professional. She explained things and assisted us through our journey with the chimps.

Our adventure in Bwindi with the gorillas was also a once in a lifetime experience, but I was disappointed in the guides. Not once did they offer an assist, or helping hand, as we trekked through the mud and hilly terrain. Several times we had to call out to them, because we weren't sure which path to follow. They were not informative or very friendly. Aside from that, this was still an awesome adventure!

Our walk to the village in Rwanda was very nice, as was our tour in the city. Our visit to the Rwanda Genocide Memorial was memorable and informative. All of our accomodations were great, especially in Rwanda!

If I were to do it again, I would do my homework better and try to avoid so much travel time each day. I didn't realize how many hours we would be spending in the car. An extra couple of days would definitely have made this trip even better!

Thanks Rwandagorilla, aka Gorilla Trek Africa, for a superb adventure!

Quiet park with nice accommodation, good destination for a couple of days.
Overall rating
4/5

We spent 3 nights with a hired 2wd car. We stayed at a cottage at Leokwe camp (Mapungubwe East), which was very well equipped. There are some baobab trees and beautiful rocks in the camp and there is even a small swimmng pool. There are no fences at Leokwe camp, so wildlife can come to your doorstep. We saw klipspringers and many birds while having breakfast. In the evening we heard some noise in the dark ant saw a african civet, an animal we had never seen before. When we stayed here in februari 2010 we saw a couple of elephants near our cottage.
There are not many roads suitable for 2wd, but some more for 4wd. Now, as two years ago, we didn't see much wildlife in the eastern part of the park. You can go to the treetop hide and watch bee-eaters at the Limpopo river and a little further view the confluence of this river with the Shashe river. At the reception we were told that there were lions seen in this part of the park, we can hardly believe that, as several cows were roaming free in the park. Conclusion: in the eastern part of the park you won't see many wildlife, but the secenery is fine and you'll get "bush vibes".
In the western part we saw many more animals, especially from the Maloetswa hide.
We spent two mornings at the hide (and were all allone then) and saw a lot of animals and birds coming for a drink. In our video you can see what animals we saw within a couple of hours. The big five however was only represented by elephants (and there are a lot of them in the park). The tented camp at the western part also is unfenced and is situated in lovely open forest.
There are more campsites in the park which we didn't visit.
The weather was dry and very warm (in februari even warmer).
To travel from the eastern to the western part of the park you have to go out the gate at the reception as there is no internal connection between the two parts.
You can drive thorugh a graded road (20 km) or take the tar road to Pont Drift (40 km). We would not recommend the graded road for 2wd cars. Though when we drove this road two years ago we saw many elephants along this road.
When you have booked an accommodation you must check in at the reception at the eastern part of the park. Recently they have opened a small restaurant near the reception where you can have a meal. But remember from the reception to Leokwe camp the distance is 14 km, so it takes you at least half an hour to get back in time.
If you wish you can book a walk or drive at the reception.
