Fantastic 4-day safari
A work colleague and I took advantage of being in Tanzania for work to go on the Meru Slopes 4-day Tarangire - Serengeti – Ngorongoro Crater tour at the end of January, 2017.
Firstly, I have to say what great value for money the tour is. For around USD 750 each, you get picked up on arrival and dropped off for departure at Kilimanjaro airport, which is about an hour’s drive from Arusha, where the tour departs. The price also includes overnight accommodation the night before and the night after the tour (so you actually get 5-nights accommodation in total). The hotel is basic but clean and breakfast is included.
I’ll break the rest of the safari down into sections so you can read the parts you’re interested in.
Vehicle
On the tour you travel in a Toyota 4WD, which accommodates up to 6 tour passengers, the driver/guide and the cook. The vehicle has a raiseable roof so all tour passengers can stand up in the vehicle during the game drives and get great views and photographs of the wildlife. The vehicle quite roomy and provided good views of the surrounding countryside even when the roof was lowered. It was dependable for most of the tour, but developed a problem with the suspension on the penultimate day which the driver fixed for the final day.
Accommodation
Arusha. The pre/post hotel was quite basic and also quite noisy (from outside). There are other accommodation options available when booking, so if really want a good night sleep ask for other accommodation options. We picked up a couple who had stayed at a nearby guesthouse who said that they had no problem with noise at their guesthouse. Wifi is available at the hotel, but in truth it’s only really usable around reception and not in the rooms. The rooms themselves were clean and functional. There was hot running water, a flushing toilet, clean towels, mosquito net and a TV. No air-con or fan, but the windows open to let in the cooler night air, but also the early-morning noise. Extra nights should cost around USD 25. If you book as two people (like my work colleague and I did), then you’ll be allocated a twin room. You might want to pay the extra USD 25 for your own.
Safari. This was a camping safari, so we spent each night under canvas. The first night was spent at Sunbright Campsite next to the small village of Mto wa Mbu, on the north side of Lake Manyara (https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g7044962-d10357037-Reviews-Manyara_Sunbright_Lodge_and_Campsite-Mto_wa_Mbu_Lake_Manyara_National_Park_Arusha_Re.html). This was really ‘glamping’, with big two-person tents already set up, with beds inside and running hot water in the shower/toilet behind each tent.
The second night (in the Serengeti) was proper camping. Everyone helps to erect the tents. There’s one tent per two people, so even if you are travelling alone you’ll still have to share if there are other lone travellers. This shouldn’t be a problem as you’ll already have spent a full-day together having had some great experiences and become friends with the other travellers. The campsite was much better than I thought it would be. It had toilet/shower blocks with hot running water, a cookhouse, and a dining area. Spending the night camping out in the Serengeti was an absolutely top experience. For a whole hour before we went to bed, we all just lay on our jackets or blankets staring up at the crystal-clear night sky, pointing out planets, stars and constellations, with the occasional brilliant flash of a meteorite zooming across. The rest of the night was also great, I’d occasionally wake to the sound of baboons giving their alarm, groups of hyenas patrolling the savannah or the pride of lions that were stationed a few hundred yards away from the campsite! At one point in the night there was a lion just a few yards away from the tent, roaring away in response to the larger pride nearby. This was actually really exciting and not at all frightening. You’re told when you arrive to stay in your tents at night and if you really need to go for a pee in the night, just go outside the tent – good advice!
The third night is spent on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater at the Simba campsite. The crater campsites are typically much busier (about 15 tents at the Serengeti campsites, 40 at Simba), but noise wasn’t much of a problem as everyone will be getting up at 5am to head down to the crater for sunrise. The facilities were similar to the Serengeti, although not much hot water to be had in the showers.
Safari staff
For the safari, we had a driver/guide ‘Zigi’ and our cook ‘Booga’.
I presumed that we’d be doing our own cooking, so it was a pleasant surprise to find out we had a cook of our own. Booga was a great cook and the food was very good, especially considering the basic facilities we had. Tasty soups, chicken and fish mains, banana fritters, etc for the evening meals, toast, omelettes, chapattis, tea/coffee, mango, etc for breakfast and a packed lunch for midday picnics. Booga was also a really nice guy, always smiling and helped out with setting up and bringing down the tents.
Zigi our driver and guide was obviously very experienced at both. He knew his way around all the parks we visited very well and seemed very popular amongst the other guides from other companies. His network of other guides along with his knowledge of the parks meant that he did a great job at finding us all the popular animals (e.g. in the first afternoon in the Serengeti he located lion, cheetah and leopard). As with Booga he was really nice guy, always willing to share his knowledge of the areas we were visiting. The only criticism I’d have is that although lots of effort and concentration was put into seeing the really popular species, less attention was given to other animals. For example, if I’d not pointed out an antelope species that was unfamiliar to me near the road, we would have just driven past the only Hartebeest of the trip. It would have been nice to see attention to getting us the biggest range of animals during the whole trip, not just the most popular ones. Other than that, both Zigi and Booga were excellent and we’d never have had anywhere near as good of a trip without them.
Animals
The range of birds, mammals and reptiles we saw on the trip was incredible and would warrant a separate review in itself. Other than not seeing any crocodiles (the dry season is a bad time to see them due to the lack of water) I can’t think of a single animal that I expected to see and didn’t. Massive herds of migrating Wildebeest, a leopard with two cubs feeding on an Impala, Spotted Hyenas hunting down wildebeest, the cutest baby elephants, 4 species of cat and 150+ species of bird (my speciality). The morning that we spent in the Ngorongoro was one of the best experiences of my life. Everything was really great and I can’t recommend this tour enough.
Summary
This was a very well organised tour and excellent value for money. Even though I’m in my 50s and used to a somewhat more luxurious lifestyle (gone are the days of British camping holidays for me), given the option I’d still go camping instead of staying in lodges. You get a fantastic feel of being closer to nature on a camping safari (I’ve done the safari lodges in Kenya, so feel qualified to make this remark) and I’d definitely use Meru Slopes again if (when!) I return to Tanzania.
Tips:
Download the Google Sky Map app before you leave. It came in really handy to look at the night sky in the Serengeti. I bought a Vodacom sim card to use during my trip. You can still get a pretty good signal right out in the remotest parts.
Luggage – take as little as possible and leave any suitcases at the hotel before you leave. You’ll need to keep your luggage with you in the tents and they’re not big enough to take large suitcases. We took and shared a large duffle bag with all our stuff in it. If you minimise the amount of luggage in the back of the vehicle, this also means that there will be less need to put overflow into the main passenger space of the vehicle.
Awesome, very professional, and affordible
I have been travelling Africa for 10 years and have never had the desire to go on Safari, but I was forced to on this trip, and I was completely surprised that I enjoyed it so much. Blue Mountain arranged the whole trip without any hassle. I became friends with the owners and hung out with them and their family afterwards. I couldn't have ask for a better trip. Blue Mountain staff you are the best!

14 day safari
From the first time I contacted Mr OT about our tour the communication was very professional & response time was extremely quick. I have been to Kenya several times & this tour lived up to all my expectations. The price we paid was very reasonable compared to other companies I looked at. Our guide/driver John was very knowledgeable & friendly with a good sense of humour. We are already planning to book another tour with this company. I would highly recommend them.

The Perfect Safari Experience
My wife and I contemplated a safari trip and wanted to maximize the wildlife experience and exposure to East African culture while respecting the impact to the environment, and contributing to the East African community in some notable way. I'm thrilled to report that the Safari Partners - and Chris Ronneseth specifically - exceeded all of our expectations in this regard. Our experience was truly amazing - and managed to somehow exceed our own expectations for everything we hoped to see and experience while in Tanzania.
The Safari Partners recommended the Asilia group camps for all of our African safari - and these people absolutely understand their business - I was very impressed with how "locked down" their entire process was (from pickups to dropoffs, organization of all of our activities, meals, etc). We were very impressed with their commitment to the environment, the local communities they operate in, etc - this was a real plus for us in understanding our impact in coming to Africa and made us appreciate the decision to leverage Asilia even more. The guides were top notch at all 3 camps we visited, (Oliver's, The Highlands and Kimondo Mobile Camp) and the 3 recommended by Safari Partners offered a terrific cross section of experiences that resulted in us seeing the big 5, 3 of the dangerous 5 (the only 3 in Africa) and basically everything we had hoped we would see. The camps were beautiful and each very different. And despite truly remote experiences in the middle of the "safari action", there was still some room to be pampered with cold drinks, and beautifully prepared meals. We came to love the morning wake up call - with staff bringing a tray with hot coffee/tea and a few cookies to slowly start your day. The "Sundowner" was another tradition we came to appreciate - stopping to view the sunset over the African plains or hillsides while enjoying a cold beverage and snack - what memories!
Our personal favourite camp was Oliver's with the tent location and wildlife viewing, the inclusion of night game drives and walking safari's, our tent, etc. We really enjoyed everything going on there. We also particularly enjoyed the organized cultural visit to the Maasai village and the interaction with the people there at The Highlands camp - That was a very unique experience. And of course our stay at Kimondo within the Serengeti offered such a vast wildlife experience and variety of ecosystems, it is tough not to have a soft spot for that location.
Overall, I feel we had the perfect trip - and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Safari Partners and the Asilia camps if anyone ever asks me about a trip to Africa. We would also highly recommend you take advantage of a stopover from North America on your way to Africa. We took a few days in Amsterdam and it provided just the right break to get acclimatized to the time zone changes, and be well rested before you head into Africa for the main attraction.
The reviews are real - Check them out.

comfort safaris on a budget
Our 2nd trip to Africa was much shorter on a much more restricted budget. We were uncertain we could do it without the hassle of camping. The trek across camping grounds to get to the loo in the middle of the night loses its allure at our age.
Enter Kenya Walking Survivors Tours. Comfortable lodge accommodation on a camping budget.
Our Driver, John proved to be not only a skilled driver but a knowledgeable guide. His ability to find the animals we wanted to see was impressive. At one point we happily sat and waited for nearly a hour to see lion cubs, when others came and went without seeing anything, we were told, "patience." His advice rewarded us.
Thanks to Kenya Walking Survivors Tours we had the most exciting and memorable holiday.
We have become safari addicts. There is no doubt we will be travelling with them again, it's just a matter of how quickly we can save the money.
I have no hesitation in recommending KWST to anyone contemplating travel in East Africa.
If none of the itineraries suit, they will tailor one for you.

A wonderful chance to experience an amazing safari at budget costs
I went on safari with Best Camping in September 2016 ehwith my friend. From the very start it was easy to plan, I spoke with Imraan and was offered flexibility on dates and pick up and drop off locations. Ben was an excellent driver who made us laugh, and has an excellent eye, meaning we saw elephants, lions, zebras, giraffes, ostriches, hippos and more. The tents were small but adequate, with hot showers, electricity after sundown and the occasional bonfire at night! The food was plentiful and it was an all round enjoyable experience, at much less than most other safari operators. Would thoroughly recommend.

Jackson - The guide that can find the Dodo bird
We just got back from a 9 day safari followed by 3 days in Zanzibar. We had a group of four, two couples in our 30’s. We worked through Matoka Tours. I found them online. They had the best reviews by far. Most importantly everyone raved about their guides. This was a huge sell for me. Connecting with you guide can make or break your trip.
I started out with emailing Ilse van Agtmaal, Sales Manager for Tanzania. I was worried at first but let me tell you….IIse has to be the most patient person there is. She put up with a least 75 emails from me (our group went back and forth on time of year and locations). Every email was answered with grace and kindness. By the time we paid for the trip I had zero worries about sending money.
When we got to Arusha we were greeting by one of the kindest people I have ever meet. Jackson H. (or action Jackson). He has two beautiful children, his baby was born SIX days before our tour. And is basically a walking animal/bird encyclopedia.
He/they took care of everything, all lodges/camps were always happily awaiting us. We never had to do anything in regards to park registration/fees. He even found me clean and tidy restrooms whenever I needed, except the Serengeti, which is too beautiful to pollute with structures and buildings. (Hey! This is a big deal for a lady).
On the second day it became very apparently that Jackson was truly listening to everything we said. He knew all the special things we each wanted to see and was very determined to find them for us. He saw stuff that other guides drove past without noticing, and knew how to position us so we always got our own private viewings. Like the morning he found us an entire pride of Lions in the Serengeti. There were 12 of them, from babies to full grown males. We watch them lay and play, then we followed them as slowly got up, one by one and drifted back into the trees and fog like a dream.
We ended up seeing over 50 lions, the Big 5? No Problem, we saw 4 in one day. I am fascinated by little cats in the wild....he found me a Serval at Sunset! We have movies of baby elephants playing in mud puddles, and a Cheetah teaching her cubs how to hunt. We sat near a leopard in a tree for what had to be 30 mins...time stood still as I gazed upon it and sketched its spots. I saw a baby wildebeest take its first drink of milk, followed by its first steps. Our grouped dubbed him as….”Jackson, the guide that can find the Dodo bird”.
Since this is getting to be such a long review i’ll sum it up and say:
Every meal was amazing, I never imaged we would eat as well as we did. I had planned on dropping a few pounds on the trip...nope! I gained some.
We always had hot showers, the cleanest of rooms and the best service. We had booked a comfort tour, but it was a luxuries and extravagant to us.
So many clean bathrooms..Everywhere!
The vehicle was always in perfect condition. We saw some people with a broken jeep in the Serengeti. Not us, we rode in style.
Clean water was never an issue
Travel sickness - One of the gentlemen in our group fell very sick. One night he couldn’t make it down for dinner, Jackson had the lodge cook him a special meal of tomato soup, rice and bread. He had them take it to his room/hut/tent and wouldn’t leave until he tried to eat. (now that's caring for your fellow human)
Zanzibar - not so much for me. Not to be a silly America, but oh my goodness hot in summer. We should have sprung for a lodge with A/C. Personally I felt more at home in the Serengeti. I connected with the park people better. Zanzibar felt a bit icy.
To conclude, I am so blessed to have taken this trip. I thank Makote Tours for making it the trip of our lives. (well, actually….we might go back, it was too good to stay away). And for always making us feel safe and comfortable, for treating us as good friends, not just clients.

Masai Mara Safari
I greatly enjoyed my flight, hotel, meals, and time viewing animals arranged by Eastern Vacations. Their service was good and the safari was better than I expected. I would give them five stars if it was easier to send them money from the United States.

Amazing Memories Safaris Provides an Outstanding Trip
Traveling to Kenya is not new to me. This trip in March 2017 was my 7th visit. When trying a new trip operator, I have typically put them under the microscope. For the last 3 trips, I traveled with All Seasons Safaris. My first trip went well so I traveled with them the next 2 trips. All went well with only a couple of minor issues revolving around the mPesa system. More recently, a couple of clients I had referred (which I have always followed up with) had more significant issues. Based on those issues, I decided to get quotes from other operators.
I requested a quote from Amazing Memories Safaris. From my initial contact, Anne was extremely helpful and communicated professionally. For this trip, a slightly shorter one, I decided to go to only 2 different camps but stay 4 nights in each. The most significant change was that instead of traveling in a van with the same driver/guide throughout the whole trip, I opted to fly to locations. This was a big challenge to me because of the total weight restriction of 15 KG (33 lbs total for all luggage). My camera gear weighs almost half of that allowance. Anne assured me that I could do it, but also offered to store anything I wished to leave in Nairobi with her to decrease weight to the bush. Excellent. The challenge was on.
Originally I was thinking I’d travel in June but the international flights were a lot higher in price. By traveling in March, the low season, I took advantage of the lower air fares, as well as one camp (Offbeat Mara) offered a special, pay for 3 nights, stay 4. The other camp (Laikipia Wilderness Camp) had low season rates. And the best part, both camps did not have a single supplement which is good because I travel solo.
On my initial arrival into the Nairobi airport, although the plane was on time, clearing immigration (with my eVisa in hand) took 1 hour plus 20 minutes. I was one of the first persons to exit the plane but due to some sloppy handling of the lines, one of the last to clear their check point. Luckily my bag was still there waiting for me. I was never so happy to see my tour operators waiting for me. It was a very late night for them as we didn't arrive at Southern Sun Mayfair until 12:30am.
Even though I had been to Kenya 6 times, I had many questions for Anne, especially those that involved the air travel portion on the domestic flights. I was unaware that during the low seasons, often the small planes either don’t fly or if they have only 1 passenger, that person has to purchase a 2nd seat (the policy on Safarilink). Now I’m all for feeling like you have your own plane, but I didn’t want to have to book an extra seat. Anne said she could find a solution. What she was able to do, was to have me fly to Nanyuki and then instead of flying directly to the Mara (where I was the only passenger), she had me fly back to Wilson and then fly from there back out to the Mara. That solved purchasing the extra seat. She also said someone from the company would come to Wilson on that day I had to make the transfer to another domestic airline to help me with my luggage so I wouldn't have to carry it and strain my back. I was impressed. As it turned out, there must have been a change on flight passengers because I was the only person on the flight from Nanyuki back to Wilson but Anne said they would take care of the charge.
A big concern I had during this trip had to do with the disputes going on between the cattle herdsman and the ranch owners in the Laikipia area. I was extremely nervous not knowing what was happening on the ground. Anne stayed in continuous contact with Annabelle from Laikipia Wilderness Camp as to the situation and said there were no problems there and there were currently guests at the camp. This reassurance from Anne went a long way to making me feel more comfortable (as well as my husband at home who was very concerned).
Anne also communicated well to the camps about my preference to have a larger bed as well as my dietary requests. On arrival to the camps, they verified this information.
Upon arrival at Wilson (coming back from Laikipia) Anne and company co-owner Joseh met me at Safarilink to assist me with my bags to SAX airline. Since there was some time between flights, we had the opportunity to talk more. They wanted to know all about my experiences so far and was there anything they needed to correct. No, all was perfect. They waited until my flight was called to make sure I was off on the next part of my adventure, the Mara.
When I arrived back from the Mara, Anne was there to greet me again. I had a day room at the Eka Hotel and she got me checked in, even getting them to extend their normal 6pm check out time to 7pm to give me some extra time prior to my flight home at midnight. At 8pm, I was picked up promptly by my driver for the short trip to the airport and the long flight home.
My experience with Amazing Memories Safaris was excellent. They are very professional and go the extra mile to make sure all your desires are met (and then some). They have bumped to the top of my list of tour operators to use when I return and I would definitely refer others to them.

This trip was exeptional
Please write your review ; I would first like to thank Mr Ndamungu for his professionalism and our guide Samwel , without them this trip would not have had the same and it is thanks to their devotion vouyage it will remain for us as good and wonderful memories. We liked Tanzania as much for its scenery, national parks but also for its people. They are very likeable people. The visit to the Maasai village of Longuido was perfect, far from villages turned into marketing to tourists, the guide Loy Tribe Datoga Hadzabe and was perfect clear explanations person invests in his work). The different tribes gave us a taste of change of scenery,(Tarangire, Lake Mannyara, Serengheti and Ngorongoro) are wonderful, we had the chance to see a lioness hunting and thanks to our guide , the big five was assured. The lodges were very comfortable, the food very good and excellent. We returned the head filled with beautiful and good memories. Thank you
