Comfortable bare-bones group-travel through Kenya

The wildlife flourished in 2007, enough rain and lots of sun. We got to see many (bigger) animals such as the Big 5. Accommodations were mostly basic and thus fine. Travel by truck with nice horse-shoe shaped seat plan, so you could talk to everyone all the time. Great fun! The guide was very friendly, as the cook was good. The guide knew a lot (had been to Kenya couple of times). We got to photograph a lot of animals and do some nice hikings. Also time to visit villages, towns and enjoy where ever we came.

You see a lot of wildlife. And a lot of tourists. Coming down into the crater is of great beauty. Awesome scenery. The animals are almost half tame. In Selous you can't approach a wildebeest closer than 50 or 100 m. Here it sits still on the road as you drive by. Huge agglomerations of wildlife and some pieces of dusty empty plains with just some animals. It's good to get your close up photos. Not to see rare animals. Some birds to see, not too spectacular - except for lunch steeling black kites. Expect to see at least 20+ 4x4 at any time. Everything worth looking at has a group of vehicles around it.

Vast plains, huge concentrations of wildlife. The great migration of course. If you want to see as much as possible, go here. All the big cats, all the undulates. Great landscapes, koppies and oasis like rivers. Downsides are the amount of tourists. You see many vehicles standing around a group of lions or that cheetah.

Fantastic scenery, great wildlife - the only reason it is not 5-star is that sometimes, particularly in the more popular parks, things are bit crowded.

If you want a great safari experience which is more than just wildlife, head to Kenya. A great part of the experience is getting to know your guide or driver and relaxing at a camp during the day. I highly recommend staying in one place for a few days to see more than just the big animals. By staying in one place, you begin seeing more deeply the animals and the people who live in the area. There is something for everyone; the big animals, birds, flowers, scenery and interaction with people. Accommodations are often simple and food often new but that is why one goes, not to have all of what is at home, but to try new things.

If you like safaris, Botswana is the place for you. Kilometers and kilometers of untouched land, where the big animals roam free. Moreover, Botswana has a good economical and political status, so it is a very safe destination for your safari.

This was I believe a less touristy destination, but I cannot compare as this was the only safari we had been on

I have only been to Tanzania, Namibia and Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, and of the three, Tanzania wins hands down for wildlife. However, if you're into the dunes in the Namib Desert and shopping in some of the cities, then Namibia will be right up your alley. We only went to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe so we didn't see enough for me to comment about it.
