Amazing River Wonderful Elephants

Chobe proved one of the highlights of Africa trip. The river is amazing - almost like the ocean in May at the end of the rainy season. The river trips allow the visitor to see the animals close up without intruding in their space. watching young male elephants playing together in the river was delightful. also the sunset over the river to Namibia was breathtaking. We stayed at Chobe Safari Lodge which was luxury; great staff helpful and friendly. Would do it again!

A country where one feels at risk as regards personal safety. We walked around after dark. Slightly more developed than Zambia or Zimbabwe, maybe because the clientele were largely South African.

About: Tanzania
For seeing and getting close to wildlife, Tanzania is an excellent choice, especially for photos.

A friend and I traveled to Tanzania with Overseas Adventure Travel (Boston, MA, in the U.S.) as part of a small-group tour of 15. Our main interest was photographing wildlife, but we also enjoyed the opportunities we had to visit tribal villages and a school and to get a feel for the culture, especially in the Arusha area. The tent encampment we experienced in the Serengeti was wonderful. It was amazing to be in such wild country and yet have such beautifully prepared meals. The lodge we stayed at in the Ngorongoro crater area was wonderful -- beautiful grounds with wonderful flowers. The guides were experienced in helping us spot wildlife and drove expertly on roads that were sometimes quite bumpy. All in all a trip of a lifetime!!

There is no other place I have found in the region with the spectacular scenery of the crater. The crater wall makes such a superb backdrop for the wildlife resident there.

Birding was spectacular! Other wildlife was amazing but not as diverse as the other parks we visited.

Our third photo safari to Tanzania took place in May 2011. Of the three, this was the most spectacular trip. Besides the scenic splendor of the location we spent more intimate time with the wildlife than previous trips including two leopard cubs frolicking on their own a few meters from our vehicle for two hours and ours was the only vehicle in sight. We also spent over two hours with a pride of 37+ lions, 17 of which were small cubs. The accommodations were exceptional. Our guide had been involved in rhino research at Serengeti National Park for 13 years prior to becoming a guide and was beyond belief in his knowledge and experience. Other than a rain storm that made the dirt roads slippery and almost impassable, the weather was just what we expected for that time of year, NICE! Will we go back? The next trip is already planned for 2013.
