Kruger park doesn't have the same bush ibe as e.g. camping in Moremi or Chobe in Botswana because it is so easy to self drive. But it does have a lot of great wildlife (which can also be a challenge to see because of the thick scrub. I really loved combining the safari element with other wildlife activities such as diving (Mozambique), birding (e.g. penguins at Betty's bay and pelagic seabirds), whale watching (hermanus), sightseeing (Blyde river and Cape town) and shark diving around the cape.

Our visits to Tanzania were among the most memorable experiences of my life

All aspects of our visit to Ruaha National Park were excellent. Our daughter worked for several years for the United Nations War Crimes Tribunal in Arusha, Tanzania, and while she was there my wife and I visited her twice, once in 2003 and once in 2005. Our arrangements for tours and guides were a bit unique, in that our daughter used her local contacts to arrange for tours and guides, and all of those arrangements turned out to be absolutely excellent. During our visits to Tanzania we visited the Ngorongoro crater, the Serengeti plains, The Oldavi gorge, northern Ethiopia, and my daughter and I climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. All of our experiences were thrilling, and I would not hesitate to recommend a visit to that part if the world to anyone.

We arrived at Blue Lagoon in the dry season and boy was it dry. We set up camp under the tree, and the staff helped us fill a paddling pool for the kids. The old house was great to eat in and was a welcome hint at civilisation, and had plenty of character. Unfortunately when we set off the next morning to see the park our van wouldn't start, the rest of the day was spent walking to the airstrip to stand under the only tree where a cell phone would work and try to get help to come during the week of one of the refinery shut downs, so fuel was scarce. Fortunately a couple of guys who were looking at starting a camp were visiting for the day and took my wife and kids back to Lusaka. Our mechanic flew in in his BMW at about midnight, crashed into a tree, fixed the van in 5 minutes, and we were home with a memory, a story, but no safari.
