The Selinda Concession is among the top wildlife destinations in northern Botswana. While staying at one of Selinda’s exclusive, upmarket lodges, you’ll enjoy excellent guiding and a wide range of activities, including game drives, night drives, walking safaris and boat trips. Wildlife viewing is very good, with most big safari animals present, except rhino. The reserve is one of the best in Botswana for wild dog sightings.

Wildlife

Wildlife viewing is excellent in Selinda. There are several prides of lion here, and huge herds of elephant arrive in the Dry season (April to October), along with zebra, wildebeest and buffalo. Wild dog sightings are some of the best in Botswana, but leopard sightings are hit-and-miss. More unusual mammals that you’ll see in small numbers are roan, eland and sable antelope.

Scenery

The Selinda landscape includes waterways such as the Selinda Spillway, palm-studded floodplains and mopane woodlands. The reserve is similar to its neighbors, including the Linyanti Concession, and lies upstream from Chobe National Park and the Savuti Channel. The camps are located at the Selinda Spillway, near the usually dry Magwegqana River.

Activities

Selinda is a privately managed concession and allows activities that aren’t possible in national parks. This gives a more rounded experience of the area’s wildlife and landscapes. Activities include guided game drives, with night drives and off-road driving permitted. You can also enjoy boat trips, walking safaris and horseback riding.

Weather & Climate

The year is divided into a Wet season (November to March) and a Dry season (April to October). The rains of the Wet season are cooling at first, but they don’t do much to temper the often fierce daytime heat at this time of year. The Dry season is much milder, with relatively cool temperatures in June, including mornings that can be quite cold. Then the heat builds as the rain clouds start to gather toward the end of the season.

Best Time To Visit

Herbivores migrate into Selinda in June, a few months into the Dry season (April to October), and stick around until the year’s end. The climate and the presence of animals from June to October make these the best months to visit. If you do arrive in the wetter months, you’ll continue to spot wildlife until December. But rain-soaked roads and frequent storms will make safaris more difficult at this time.
