I loved South Africa, and I will definitely be back. September was a lovely time of year, not too hot. Loads of wildlife and birds (all beautifully coloured). A photographer's dream!
We found South Africa to be more beautiful, friendly and scenic than we expected! It is truly a great destination for safari, and other travel experiences!

Ideally I would like to see all the animals that I shoot photos of as totally wild "not on reserves", but I realize that in South Africa that's just not available as much. The parks I've visited have been amazing and the birding is top notch.
The general organisation and attention to detail of South African game reserves is second to none. The rangers and hotel staff are universally knowledgeable and pleasant. Our one regret is that South Africa is a big country and we can't visit all of it much though we would like to!

For birding it is best to go to KZN, around St Lucia.

The only reason I gave one 4-star rating is because the South African bush is much more dense than areas like Kenya and Tanzania where it can be easier to spot game from further off. That said; it does bring an additional sense of adventure to South African game drives, because you really feel like you're tracking animals in order to find them.
