It was the only safari I've ever been on, so I don't have anything to compare it to. However, for a first time, it was wonderful.
Lots of animals & birds to sight in their natural habitat. The bush has a certain unique beauty about it but the drought had dried up a lot of creek beds & vegetation. It's exciting to witness wild animals in the wild - almost surreal at times.
You probably don't get the wilderness experience you would get elsewhere - unless you go for the smaller lodges & private concessions.

I believe it is great depending on where you go but Pilanesberg Game Reserve definitely deserves 5 stars for all of those criteria. I am pretty sure the other Game Reserve will also be just as amazing. I live with my best friend who is a South African and all he has described to me has been accurate during my visit there therefore I would definitely go back some day to visit more of South Africa.

There were beautiful birds everywhere and we wished we were more knowledgeable about them.

The best three months of my life were spent in South Africa. From the Cape to Kruger, everything is amazing. I saw over 350 species of birds, incredible mammals, and gorgeous views.

The South African National Parks are superbly managed, and cater to every possible taste. All the national parks have fabulous birding and photographic opportunities, as well as excellent game viewing. Many of the parks have the big five.

We are not particularly birders, we did see a number of birds, but not a huge variety.

Lots of great wildlife as well as culture, natural beauty, variety and history. Great place to visit, great food and wine and affordable prices.
South Africa is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world. It has fantastic opportunities for people interested in all types of wildlife viewing.
