I have always gone in the winter but will soon return in summer which I believe is the best time for birding. South Africa overall is wonderful there is a huge variety of scenery and activities. It is easy to travel and has all the modern conveniences you would expect. They understand and embrace hospitality at every level from exceptionally cleaned rooms to well appointed and varied shops. South Africa benefits mainly from a variety of landscape (through mainly parks proposed which makes it really a great destination. Food is great too.

In my limited experience, I find that South Africa has good transportation infrastructure and management to easily get you to the camps, and then has the great facilities in private camps that make it possible to maximize the "bush vibe."

Wildlife was amazing in the game parks - we saw something like 35 species of mammal in our 3-week trip.
Scenic beauty was great as well, especially in Kruger, Hluhluwe, and the Drakensberg Mountains.
Birding was excellent - we saw over 300 species during our trip, mostly without hiring guides.
Everybody knows what a scenic country South Africa! What we didn't expect that many encounters with the people were as memorable as the wildlife! Can't wait to go back!

South Africa has many game reserves and experiences to meet your desires. Ngala is a private game reserve where a smaller number of guests and experienced trackers and drivers can take you to what you want to see. I visited Ngala in 1998 and what a great experience of getting up close to leopards and lions. The bush vibe in private game reserves is a certain.
