No better place to be for animal lover than Zululand on the east coast of South Africa. You got lush coastal forests, open savannahs, sand forests, bushveld, beaches, coral reefs and more. What's not to love?

Plenty of National Parks with accommodation, lots of private game parks with luxury accommodation. Travel is easy with world class airports, long distance buses and plenty of car hire available. South Africa is very proud of its conservation/wildlife facilities ... And rightly so.

When out on safari you definitively got the "bush vibe", but this is a relatively small park only a few hours by car from Johannesburg.

South Africa is a great destination, with experiences to suit all different tastes.
Cape Town is a beautiful city, the Cape Peninsula is a fantastically scenic area, as is Stellenbosch and the Cape wine country just outside of Cape Town. Johannesburg is different altogether, and students of apartheid will have a first hand experience of the legacy of apartheid and study it close up. We did not go to the bustling commercial melting pot of Durban, but would love to do so. We did go to Sun City, but did not go on any game drives there.
There are many different stunning game reserves. Some are very dangerous and you have absolutely to keep you on the safety rules. If you follow this rules, you will have an unforgettable experience.

This being my only trip to South Africa, I can't speak to other lodges or reserves, but my experience here was an absolute once-in-a-lifetime experience. Since that time, I have spoken with others and have become friends with others who have taken trips to various lodges and reserves and all had brilliant things to say. It is definitely a must-do, bucket-list destination if you're a wildlife lover!

One word - diversity. It is a 'world in one country', with myriad different habitats and landscapes in a relatively small area (compared to say Australia or the USA). Ease of travel is another big plus.
