Which other parks can I visit on a 4-day Amboseli safari?

“You could spend the entire 4 days in Amboseli and not be disappointed. Although it’s not a very large park, it does have a really dense concentration of wildlife and a diverse range of species. Staying here for 4 days would also mean that you have time for some downtime or relaxation in picturesque surrounds. That being the case, Amboseli has more than enough to keep you busy for 4 days. If, however, you’re keen to see as much as possible, there are a couple of possibilities. Just outside the park are a number of Maasai conservancies (such as Mbirikani and Selenkay) where you can see wildlife, spend time with Maasai communities, and even stay overnight. The wildlife you might see in these places is the same as inside the park, albeit at lower densities. Another option is to combine Amboseli with time in Tsavo West or Tsavo East National Parks. Each of these is around a half-day drive from Amboseli, although it’s also possible to fly.”

What kind of accommodations can I expect?

“There are only a small number of lodges inside Amboseli National Park, as well as two simple national park campsites. Outside the park’s eastern Kimana Gate there are more campsites, tented camps and lodges. There are further luxury options in the conservancies to the north and northeast of the park (but they’re still part of the same ecosystem as, and share wildlife with, the park). The campsites are generally simple places with communal showers and toilets, and not very much shade, although this can vary from one place to the next. The lodges all have spacious rooms with mosquito nets and en suite bathrooms. Tented camps are similar, but with canvas-walled safari tents instead of rooms. Some places, both inside and outside the park, also have views of Mt Kilimanjaro. If this is important for you, ask whether yours does when making the booking. Overall, the park and its surrounds have a small range of excellent choices across all budgets.”

Will I be able to see Mt Kilimanjaro on an Amboseli trip?

“You’ll always be able to see Mt Kilimanjaro because it’s a constant presence rising above the southern boundary of the park. The lower slopes are always visible. In fact, they’re impossible to miss. How much of Kilimanjaro you can see (i.e. whether you can see the summit) will depend on the weather, and on luck. With 4 days in Amboseli, however, you’re likely to see it on numerous occasions. I’ve been in Amboseli and seen Mt Kilimanjaro in all its glory for days without a break. On other occasions, the summit has only appeared for an hour or two when the clouds have cleared close to sunrise and sunset. You never quite know when it’s going to happen because Kilimanjaro has its own weather patterns. Sometimes the mountain is covered in clouds even when there are clear skies all around. Always have the camera ready, just in case.”

How much does a 4-day Amboseli safari cost?

“Prices vary greatly from one safari to the next, and from one tour operator to the next. As a starting point, your 4-day Amboseli safari will begin at around US$150 per person per day for a budget camping safari and could go up to US$500 per person per day or even higher for a high-end luxury safari. Remember also to factor in the park entry fees of US$60/35 per adult/child per day. These may or may not be included in the prices quoted by your safari tour operator. Accommodations are a big variable when it comes to the cost of your safari. Camping in a national park campsite will obviously cost significantly less than nights spent in a five-star tented camp. Rates also vary according to the season, and high-season prices (from July to October and December to March) can be double the prices you’ll pay in low season. Safari types also play a role. Private safaris (where you will have the guide and vehicle for yourself) are inevitably pricier than group safaris for which such costs are shared.”

Is it possible to extend a 4-day Amboseli tour with a beach holiday?

“It should be no problem to extend your 4-day Amboseli safari with a beach holiday, although it’s better if you organize it as early as possible. The Amboseli–beach combination is a common plan among travelers, and tour operators have lots of experience in making this happen. It’s more likely to run smoothly if you make the booking when making your original safari reservation, rather than trying to extend your trip when you’re already in Amboseli. If you do the latter, you may not have very much choice when it comes to flight times and accommodations, as many places are booked out months in advance. To make the most of your time, you’ll probably want to fly from one of the airstrips around Amboseli to the coast, with the best beaches around Diani Beach and close to Mombasa. You may need to change planes in Nairobi or Mombasa.”

We stayed at Manjaro Tented Camps. This is highly recommended and basically did our whole stay here. Otherwise being close to Kilimanjaro is great, but it's very dry and not very beautiful otherwise. Looots of elephants, which was cool.

(we went in April)
It was flooded a bit so the big cats were hiding.
Lots of elephants in big herds.
Lots of birds.
The early morning walk was 10 USD extra, but we did not do it, as we wanted to enjoy the sunrise by ourselves.
