Botswana Safari and Victoria Falls Packages
Botswana and Victoria Falls are two of southern Africa’s most remarkable destinations. Together they represent the perfect combination of wildlife and landscapes and showcase everything that’s good about southern Africa’s diverse charm. Victoria Falls is a relatively compact destination where the most difficult choices are likely to be deciding which activities to enjoy. Botswana will require a little more planning, with an incredible range of safari possibilities within the country, from the watery wonder that is the Okavango Delta to the arid dunes and grasslands of the Kalahari, with so many different experiences to be enjoyed in between.

7 Questions About Botswana Safaris With Victoria Falls Add-on
Can I easily add a visit to Victoria Falls to a Botswana safari?
“It should be very easy to add a visit to Victoria Falls to a Botswana safari. Geographically, they are quite close, and because Victoria Falls is one of Africa’s most popular destinations, most safari tour operators have considerable experience in attaching an excursion to Victoria Falls to safaris elsewhere. From Kasane, and even more so from Maun, regular flights connect Victoria Falls with Botswana’s main safari airports. The only thing you really need to consider is which order you wish to visit them in. Do you want to begin your holiday at the drama and awe-inspiring power of the falls? Or would you rather begin by heading out in search of animals? These are the pleasurable decisions that await you as you choose between packages for your Botswana and Victoria Falls safari.”
1What can I expect from a trip to Botswana with a Victoria Falls add-on?
“There are lots of variations as to what you can do and what your safari will look like. A lot will depend on the choices you make. For a start, you’ll need to determine how much time you have to spend on safari, then divide it up between Botswana and Victoria Falls. When deciding how long to spend at Victoria Falls, remember that this is one of southern Africa’s adventure capitals: there’s everything from bungee jumping and zip-lining to kayaking and hiking. Take a careful look at the activities you think you might want to do and plan accordingly. Botswana will also require careful planning. You need to decide where you’d like to go in the country. Popular choices include the Okavango Delta (which has numerous places you can visit, including the Moremi Game Reserve), Chobe National Park (which could mean wild Savuti or the more accessible Chobe riverfront) and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. They’re all excellent choices and how many of these you can visit will depend on how much time you have available.”
2How much does a Botswana safari with a Victoria Falls add-on cost?
“There are lots of variables to consider when calculating the cost of your Botswana and Victoria Falls safari. One of the most important factors for determining the cost of your trip is the season when you travel. Both destinations can be visited year-round, but the prices can vary greatly from one season to the next. High season, which in most of Botswana runs from July to October, is much more expensive than low season. Just to confuse matters, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve is often in low season when the Okavango Delta and the rest of the country are at their busiest and most expensive. Seasons in Victoria Falls tend to have smaller price variations than Botswana. And wherever you are, prices peak around Christmas and New Year. Also important when it comes to the cost of your tour is the type of safari you want. Private safaris are more expensive than group safaris, with self-drive safaris somewhere in between. Another thing to think about is the level of luxury you need. There is great variation between budget and luxury safari prices, especially when it comes to accommodation. As a general rule, prices start at US$150 per person per day for a budget camping safari and go up to US$500 per person per day and beyond for a top-end luxury tour. To this, you’ll probably need to add on a flight between Maun or Kasane to Victoria Falls: this will add at least US$150 to US$200 per person to the overall cost of your trip.”
3What is the ideal holiday length for a trip to Botswana and Victoria Falls?
“The more time you can dedicate to a Botswana and Victoria Falls safari, the better. A week to two weeks would be ideal. Part of the decision about how long you go on safari will depend on how much time you have to spare for your holidays, and how much you can afford to pay. Having decided this, you can start to fit in places you want to go in the time you have available. In Botswana, you should ideally try and spend at least five to seven days in the Okavango Delta, three to four days in Chobe National Park, and perhaps another three or four days in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve. If you don’t have two weeks to spare for Botswana, pick just one or two of these destinations: a week really is a minimum. For Victoria Falls, you could see the falls in just a day, but plan to spend a minimum of three days, especially if you want to do some of the many activities on offer.”
4What is the best time to visit Botswana and Victoria Falls?
“The best time to visit Botswana and Victoria Falls varies a little between the two destinations. For Victoria Falls you can expect the best weather from June or July through to October, and the best months for seeing them in all their glory is from June to September. The greatest volume of water passes along the Zambezi River and over the falls from February to May, thanks to the rains that begin in November and really take hold in December, January and February, but the spray during these months can block the view. Botswana can be a little more complicated. The best months in terms of weather are usually from June to September, which fall during the Dry season (May to October) and coincide roughly with the high season (July to October). This applies to the Okavango Delta, Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park. The exception is the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, when the months of June and July can be extremely cold, making for some chilly early morning game drives. The best months for the Central Kalahari usually run from December to March.”
5Which parks should I visit on a Botswana tour with a Victoria Falls add-on?
“Which parks you visit all depend on what you want to see. In Botswana, Chobe National Park has two world-class wildlife areas: Savuti and the Chobe riverfront. These are filled with elephants and big cats, as well as other impressive animal species and birdlife. Apart from Moremi Game Reserve, much of the Okavango Delta is not actually a national park or game reserve, although it does have a number of private concessions. Either way, the Delta is one of the best places in Africa to see the continent’s charismatic wildlife. Away from the watery north, Botswana has some exceptional arid-zone national parks. The Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans National Parks form part of the largest network of salt pans on the planet, and host a zebra migration that’s one of Africa’s largest. Away to the south, the marvelous Central Kalahari Game Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Africa, and is wonderful for oryx, big cats and more. While you’re at Victoria Falls, you could visit Lower Zambezi National Park, which has four of the Big Five (no rhinos) and lots of lovely river frontage.”
6How do I get to Victoria Falls from Botswana?
“The easiest and quickest way to get from Botswana to Victoria Falls is by plane. Regular flights (as well as smaller charter flights) connect Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe with airports in northern Botswana, such as Maun and Kasane. Victoria Falls is such a popular drawcard for international tourists that you should have plenty of choice when it comes to flights. And while flights seem more expensive than driving, you’ll save time if you fly, which might mean that it works out cheaper to travel this way. If you’re driving, it will take more time to get between Botswana and Victoria Falls, so make sure you allocate an extra day or two for your overall safari. But you will get a closer look at the worlds you’re passing through along the way. Remember also that you’ll need to cross at least one border (into Zimbabwe or Zambia) when you travel by road.”
