Safaris From Moshi - Compare 528 Tours
Moshi is a terrific base for visiting Tanzania’s north. It’s best known as the place where many ascents of Mt Kilimanjaro begin and end, and that’s certainly a main reason why travelers come here. But Moshi is also smaller and quieter than nearby Arusha, meaning it can be a good place from which to launch a safari to the parks of Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit. Doing so will only add an hour or two to your journey and may be worth it for the more relaxed feeling it can offer before or after your safari. Apart from Mt Kilimanjaro, Moshi is also the best base for exploring the rarely visited Mkomazi National Park.

5 Questions About Safaris From Moshi
Where can I go on a safari from Moshi?
“The most popular excursion from Moshi is to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. Whether you consider that to be a safari will depend on your perspective. Even if you don’t climb Africa’s highest mountain, you will get fantastic Kilimanjaro views from Moshi whenever the clouds clear, and this may be reason enough to stay here. Moshi is also the closest town to Mkomazi National Park, which is one of Tanzania’s least-known and least-visited parks. It has terrific wildlife and wonderful views of Mt Kilimanjaro, but sees very few visitors. You could easily continue on from Mkomazi and Moshi to Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks in southeastern Kenya. Arusha National Park, halfway between Moshi and Arusha, is another option. It is also possible to visit the big four parks of northern Tanzania: Tarangire, Lake Manyara and Serengeti National Parks, and the Ngorongoro Crater. Visiting these destinations from Moshi instead of Arusha would only add a couple of hours at most to your trip.”
1How much time do I need for a Tanzania trip from Moshi?
“If you’re here to climb Mt Kilimanjaro, you can expect to spend at least 1 week and probably around 10 days for the full excursion. There are lots of different Kilimanjaro tours and packages, but most average this amount of time. To visit Mkomazi National Park, I would recommend at least 2 days out of Moshi. This gives you time to stay overnight in the park and enjoy a late afternoon and an early morning game drive. If you’re looking to visit the other parks of the Northern safari circuit, you should allow 2 days each for Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks, and a further 2 days for the Ngorongoro Crater. Three days (which really only equates to 1 full day once you factor in traveling time) is a minimum for Serengeti National Park. But you could, of course, spend much more time in each of these parks.”
2What animals can I see on a safari from Moshi?
“If you’re climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, your mind will likely be on other matters. But there is some wildlife around, especially in the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. These include buffalo, elephant, leopard and eland. In Mkomazi National Park, watch out for gerenuk, lesser kudu, Coke’s hartebeest, fringe-eared oryx and eland. If you’re really lucky, you might see elephant herds passing through on their migration between Mkomazi and Tsavo West National Park, which is across the border in Kenya. If you visit Arusha National Park, you might see zebra, giraffe, buffalo and elephant. There’s also a small chance you could see leopard and spotted hyena. If your safari takes you to the parks of the Northern safari circuit, there’s so much to see from the elephants and big cats of Tarangire to the elephants and tree-climbing lions of Lake Manyara. Visiting the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti means you might see the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo).”
3What is the best time of year for a trip from Moshi?
“The best time for visiting Moshi and going on a safari trip in Tanzania’s north is during the Dry season, which runs from June to October. These are the months when you can expect fine weather, mild temperatures and the driest conditions for hiking and driving. This coincides with the high season for the Northern circuit parks, which runs from July to March. It is the busiest time of year with the highest prices, but you can escape the crowds a little by choosing to visit Mkomazi National Park. If you’re a birder, the best months are from November to April, which coincide with the Wet season. The weather may not be ideal, but this is when countless migratory bird species spend time in the area, escaping the colder weather in Europe and North Africa. If you choose to come at this time, you should end up paying less, you’ll share the trails with far fewer visitors, and it’s rare that it rains all the time. If you’re lucky, it won’t rain at all.”
4How much will this safari cost?
“Because the possibilities for going on safari from Moshi are many, you’ll have plenty of different tours and packages to choose from. If you’re looking for a cheap and affordable budget camping safari, you can expect the cost to start at around US$100 per person per day. This should include vehicle, driver, guide, meals, some drinks, game drives, accommodation (including camping equipment) and park entry fees. On a cheap budget camping safari, you might be expected to help out with chores around camp. At the more expensive end of the market, prices for your trip could start at US$350 per person per day but could cost three times that. Factors that will determine how much you pay include accommodation (some luxury tented camps have sky-high prices), whether you travel in high or low season, whether you fly between parks, and whether you’re on a group or private safari.”

Africa’s Greatest Safari Destination
There is arguably no better safari destination than Tanzania. And, to be honest, I’m not even sure I should be using the word ‘arguably’ here! Tanzania’s superb network of wildlife reserves (including 22 national parks) is the most...

Africa as I pictured it
I still remember the first picture of Africa I saw when I was a kid. Vast, stretching plains of undulating yellow grass, broken only by flat-topped acacia trees and the odd strolling giraffe, all set beneath the dome of a perfect blue sky....
