Hwange Safari From Victoria Falls - Compare 42 Tours
If you were to visit both Hwange National Park and Victoria Falls on one trip, you really would have the most extraordinary holiday. These are two of southern Africa’s grandest natural spectacles, one a national park filled with lions and elephants and so many other wildlife species, the other an astonishing and formidable force of nature’s power on the biggest possible scale. Combining the two is easy to do, because both are in the far northwest of Zimbabwe (although Victoria Falls is also accessible from Zambia). Also, numerous operators offer tours and packages that visit both destinations.

5 Questions About Hwange Safaris From Victoria Falls
Is a Hwange National Park safari easily combined with Victoria Falls?
“Not only is a Hwange safari from Victoria Falls possible, it’s actually really easy to organize. Victoria Falls is one of the most popular destinations in southern Africa, and almost everyone who visits tries to combine their trip here with a safari. One possibility would be to visit Zambezi National Park (Zimbabwe) or Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park (Zambia), both of which are very close to Vic Falls. But neither of these parks has the number or variety of animals you find in Hwange. From Victoria Falls, on the Zimbabwean side of the border, it is around 180km/112mi by road to Hwange’s main gate, a drive that takes up to three hours on a rather potholed road. Hwange is a big place, so it may end up being farther to your actual destination within the park, but it’s still an easy journey. It’s generally best to book all legs of your safari in advance of your arrival. If you haven’t done so, however, there are lots of experienced tour operators in and around Vic Falls, and they should usually be able to make arrangements at short notice. There’s also plenty of competition, which should help to keep prices down.”
1How do I get to Hwange from Victoria Falls?
“Given the relatively short distance by road between Victoria Falls (on the Zimbabwean side) and the main entrance gate to Hwange, the easiest way to get between the two is by road. A road transfer between the two usually takes around three hours. Bear in mind that Hwange is one of the largest parks in the region, so once inside the gate, you may have to drive for a similar amount of time to reach your accommodation. While this may take longer, you’ll get to see a lot of the park on your way there. If you don’t have very much time, but you have an unlimited budget, and you’d like to spend more of your time on game drives rather than traveling from A to B, then you could consider an air transfer. Flying from Victoria Falls to an airstrip deep inside Hwange will take less than an hour, and you’ll have some fantastic views on the way in.”
2Which animals can I see on a Hwange safari?
“Hwange is a world-class wildlife-viewing destination. The park is most famous for its high densities of elephants, which often congregate in their hundreds around waterholes in the Dry season (April to October). Hwange also supports plenty of lions, and it’s one of the few places in Africa where some prides specialize in taking down young elephants. Other possibilities in this wonderful park, which is filled with salt lakes, waterholes and dry woodlands, include leopard, cheetah, sable and roan antelope, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, oryx and so much more. Although four of the Big Five are regularly seen in Hwange, rhinos are very scarce and seldom observed. So if you’d like to see all of the Big Five while on this trip, consider diverting to Matobo National Park (or crossing into Zambia’s Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park) to track white rhinos on foot.”
3How much time do I need for a Hwange safari?
“The more time you have the better it is for you if you want to go on a Hwange safari from Victoria Falls. For me, an ideal minimum would be a 4-day safari to Hwange (in addition to any time you spend at Victoria Falls). That would mean that you would have 2 half days traveling to and from the park from Vic Falls, plus 2 full days to explore the park itself. Any extra days will mean that you get to see more of the park and have a better chance of finding the animals you came so far to see. Four or 5 full days in the park would be perfect. If you have less time than that, you could still make a visit to Hwange. With 3 days, you’ll still have 1 full day in the park, which should mean at least four early morning or late-afternoon game drives. With just 2 days, you could still enjoy two game drives.”
4How much will a Hwange safari from Victoria Falls cost?
“You will have so many different tours and packages to choose from, whether you’re looking for a cheap and affordable safari or something at the luxury end of the market. For the former, a budget camping safari could start at around US$250 per person per day. At the luxury end of the market, expect to pay at least US$500 per person per day, but this could go significantly higher, up to US$1,000 per person per day, especially if any flights are included in your safari package. But these are only rough estimates, because there are so many variables to consider. Factors that can affect the cost of your Hwange safari from Victoria Falls include whether you’re on a private, group or self-drive safari, the season you’re traveling in, how long your safari lasts, and what kind of accommodation you choose. And always ensure that you understand what’s included in any tour price you’re quoted.”

Hwange is one of my favorite parks in Africa. The landscapes are classic southern African wildlife habitat, with large open pans and waterholes fringed with woodland a recurring theme. Lions and elephants are the undoubted highlights here,...

We were lucky enough on our first game drive, to be able to follow a lion as it tracked, caught, and killed an injured baby buffalo. Also, there were not very many jeeps underway at the Park, so we often had the feeling that we had the Park...
Would've given Hwange 5 stars, however we did not see any elephants which was highly disappointing since the park is known for the highest elephant population in Africa. What we did see was lovely, but the park is very wooded (not a lot of...
Hwange is a vast area and requires patience and travel over great distances to see the wildlife. There is no fencing so the animals wonder over large areas. We prefer to get away from volumes of commercial tourism so Hwange is the ideal...
