Moremi Budget Safari Tours
Part of the superlative Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve is one of the best places in Botswana for a cheap or budget safari. Unlike much of the rest of the Delta, most of Moremi Game Reserve is accessible in a 4WD vehicle, meaning that you shouldn’t need to factor in the cost of a return flight (which is often the case on other Okavango safaris). One of the best things about Moremi is the wildlife that you can see here: big cats, elephants and so many other mammal species, as well as lots of birds, call Moremi home. And despite its accessibility from Maun and the rest of Botswana, it never feels crowded.

5 Questions About Moremi Budget Safaris
What are the pros and cons of a Moremi GR budget safari?
“The most obvious benefit of spending your holiday on a Moremi Game Reserve budget safari is the chance to spend time in one of Africa’s best wildlife destinations. Tours to Moremi can be incredibly expensive, so to be able to do so in an affordable way is a real bonus. There is nothing quite like lying in your tent at night and listening to the night sounds of the Delta, as lions roar and elephants feed nearby. A budget safari usually means that you feel a lot closer to nature (none of the campsites have fences!) than is the case on other kinds of safaris. There are far fewer disadvantages to a Moremi Game Reserve budget safari than there are advantages. Of course, more expensive safari packages will usually involve more comfort and higher levels of service. But that’s not for everyone, and the camaraderie of camp life on a budget safari will probably be a highlight. You’re also a little more limited in where you can go on a cheap safari, because traveling further into the Delta usually means taking an expensive plane ride to get there and back.”
1What type of accommodations can I expect on cheap Moremi GR packages?
“The most widespread accommodations for those on a Moremi Game Reserve budget safari consist of campgrounds, of which there are many across the reserve. Most of these will have basic facilities that may include a shared ablutions block (with shower and toilet), fire pits, a communal cooking and dining area, and shaded camping sites. Some may have basic tents, although it is likely that your operator will bring all the necessary equipment. A few places may have simple safari tents with proper beds and canvas floors, but you’ll most likely be staying in simple camping tents and sleeping on a ground mattress. You may also be expected to help out around camp, by setting up and taking down tents, cooking and washing up.”
2Are there cheap day trips available to Moremi GR?
“A budget day trip to Moremi Game Reserve is certainly possible from Maun, although if you can stay longer, you really should. I don’t recommend driving before sunrise (and many operators simply won’t do it). Even if you set out at dawn, it can take a couple of hours to reach Moremi, and a couple of hours to return. You could spend the rest of the day there, but you should remember that you will have missed the best time of day to see Moremi’s animals, which are out and about and at their most active in the hours immediately following sunrise and before sunset. It can also be extremely hot during the middle part of the day. Despite all of this, if this is your only opportunity on your trip to visit Moremi and get a taste for the Okavango Delta, then you should absolutely take it. Even a few middle-of-the-day hours in Moremi are better than none at all, and there is still lots to see even when it’s hot.”
3How do I avoid the crowds on a Moremi GR safari?
“One of the best things about tours into Moremi Game Reserve is that it never gets really crowded, even during high season when numbers are at their highest. Some of the campsites can get a little busy, but out on your game drive looking for animals, you may even have wildlife encounters all to yourself. The main reason for this is that Moremi is a large place, and Botswana’s policy of limiting the number of camps and visitors helps to maintain that wilderness feel. If you avoid the high season months, which run from July to October, you can further reduce the time you spend in the company of other safari groups. Any time from mid-May and all of June can be much quieter, as can the rest of the year. It’s a good idea to check the weather conditions for the months you’re wishing to travel and make sure that all campsites are open; some close outside of high season.”
4How much does a Moremi GR budget safari cost?
“You can expect your Moremi Game Reserve budget safari to begin at around US$100 to US$150 per person per day. The longer you’re on safari, the easier it will be to keep the daily cost at around this level: on a short safari, you will have to divide the price of return transfers into fewer days. For a really cheap safari, you may be asked to get involved in helping out around camp. Tasks you might be asked to perform include setting up tents, packing up camp whenever you’re moving on to the next place, washing up after meals, and cooking. If you’re willing to pay a little more, there may be more staff on hand to take care of such jobs. Your daily costs should include transfers, reserve entry fees (US$11/5.50 per adult/child per day), two game drives a day, and all meals and camping equipment. A guide will almost certainly also be included.”
