What can I expect from a 10-day Namibia safari?

“On your 10-day tour you’ll probably visit several scenic highlights, such as the sand dunes of Sossusvlei or Fish River Canyon. Namibia is a great wildlife destination, but it’s the landscapes that really set this country apart. Just seeing these breathtaking landmarks under the blue Namibian skies is a special treat, but there are lots of activities on offer too. You can go quad biking between immense red dunes or sand boarding down their steep slopes. You might also enjoy an early morning hot-air balloon flight over the Namib Desert or a light-aircraft flight along the Skeleton Coast. Many tours include a few days in Etosha National Park, where you’ll get a chance to see a lot of wildlife. You might do some conventional game drives, but it’s worth sitting at the waterholes and letting the animals come to you. As with anywhere in Africa, the daily routine on a Namibia safari is getting out and about in the early morning and late afternoon. Especially when looking for wildlife on game drives, as this is when they are most active. During the hot midday hours, animals become inactive and hide in the shade. It’s advisable for us to do the same.”

Is 10 days a good length of time for a Namibia trip?

“Ten days is a fair amount of time for a Namibia safari. You’ll be able to see some of the main highlights, as well as some lesser-known locations along your route. There are a lot of places of interest in Namibia, so you’ll obviously have to make some hard choices. But 10 days will give you a chance to get a good feel for what the country has to offer. It’s also a good amount of time to get away from your work or other responsibilities at home. Although 10 days is a decent amount of time, you still need to resist the temptation to cram too much into your itinerary. Moving lodges every day is tiresome and it tends to be relatively unproductive in terms of wildlife viewing and sightseeing. Aim to spend at least 2 nights in each destination. That way you get some much-needed downtime in the middle of the day, and you don’t spend too much valuable time traveling between places.”

What kinds of tours are available for a 10-day Namibia safari?

“There are different kinds of 10-day tours available in Namibia. Use the filters on the SafariBookings website to select the types of tours that suit your preferences and budget. Firstly, you can choose between a private or a shared tour. Shared tours are not for everybody, but some people love them and they’re a great way to meet others with a common interest for travel. They also tend to be cheaper, especially for solo travelers. Group sizes vary on shared tours, and the experience of being in a big group is different from that of a small one. Larger groups often travel in overland trucks, while groups of up to six or eight people usually get around in a minivan or 4x4 vehicle. A big advantage of a private tour is that dates are more flexible. Also, your guide won’t have to worry about other guests and will be able to accommodate your wishes within reason. As Namibia is very safe and crime is almost unheard of, self-drive safaris are popular too. The roads are mostly excellent and it’s easy to get around. To make the most of a self-drive safari in Namibia, however, it might make more sense to leave the planning to the experts. This saves you time and ensures that distances are realistic and bookings are confirmed. As this kind of package usually includes 24/7 road assistance, you are less likely to lose valuable time in case of a vehicle breakdown or other problem.”

Should I choose a fly-in or road safari?

“When booking a 10-day Namibia tour you’ll have a choice between fly-in or road safaris. Both have their pros and cons. There are many great 10-day road safaris available in Namibia. You’ll probably follow a circular route, visiting several highlights and other travel destinations. However, the main places of interest are spread out, so you should expect a fair amount of driving time. The hours on the road are never wasted though, as you’ll get to appreciate the vast open spaces and endless horizons. Fly-in safaris (where you get around by small aircraft) are also quite popular in Namibia. Although they are more expensive, it’s a good way to save time traveling between places and you can visit highlights that are far apart. Fly-in packages are usually tied in with luxury accommodations. In some cases these lodges are in remote locations and offer a high level of exclusivity. If you can’t afford a full fly-in safari, you can consider combining a road safari with a flight to stay in one of the country’s remote fly-in lodges.”

What is the best time of year for a safari in Namibia?

“Namibia can be visited throughout the year. It has a dry desert climate and rainfall rarely affects travel plans. However, wildlife viewing is best during the Dry season from May to October, especially in Etosha. The waterholes in the park are a magnet for animals when water in the bush has dried out. Once the rains start, animals spread out and the viewing is not as certain. The Wet season (November to April) is hot and humid, especially from November to February. The Dry season months are more pleasant during the day but cold at night. May and June are perhaps the loveliest months, with comfortable temperatures and little rain. Landscapes are green and the air is crisp at this time. December to April is the low season, and you might get good deals during these months.”

How much will this safari cost?

“You can expect a starting price of US$1,500 per person for a 10-day shared camping tour. Mid-range private tours start at about US$3,500 per person. At the top end, fly-in tours start at around US$8,000 per person. There are several factors that determine the price of a 10-day Namibia safari. Joining a camping group tour is the most budget-friendly option, and it’s a great way to feel close to nature and bond with fellow travelers. There is also a wide range of accommodations to choose from, with prices depending on the level of comfort and luxury. Namibia has a good selection of mid-range lodges offering competitive prices. Whether you’re going for a mid-range or luxury tour, you could consider traveling out of high season (July to October). Prices are more favorable, the scenery is more beautiful and there are few travelers around. This isn’t the best time for Etosha though. Once you’ve narrowed down your priorities, get a few quotes before making a final decision.”
