Namibia Honeymoon Safaris

4.6/5  –  250 Namibia Reviews

Namibia is one of Africa’s most enticing honeymoon destinations. Imagine lying under a star-studded desert sky surrounded by red sand dunes in total silence. While there is beauty in Namibia wherever you go, there are many iconic highlights best enjoyed with someone special. Make memories together when looking down the magnificent Fish River Canyon, second in size only to the Grand Canyon. Cuddle up in a hide (camouflaged shelter) and watch herds of elephants drinking in Etosha National Park. Namibia is a top destination for any nature-lover, but to share this unique place with somebody close to your heart is a true privilege.

5 Questions About Namibia Honeymoon Safaris

Answered by Ariadne van Zandbergen

Why is Namibia a good choice for a honeymoon holiday?

“Namibia is the perfect destination for a romantic honeymoon. With its tiny population, the country is best known for dramatic landscapes and wide-open spaces. There is tranquility in all this beauty and who wouldn’t want to share this with the person they love? Whether you go on an extended road trip or you whiz around fancy lodges by small aircraft, you’ll get to spend a lot of quality time together. Namibia is never crowded or busy, so it’s easy to find peace and privacy here. The surreal environment, made up of red sand dunes, rugged mountainscapes and a fierce Atlantic coastline, hosts a wide variety of animals. Exploring the Namibian wilderness, looking for wildlife and absorbing the serene surroundings is about as romantic as it gets. But you’ll get a chance to meet the local people too. Namibians are masters of hospitality and wherever you go, you’ll be made to feel like the special guests you are.”

Are there recommended activities for a honeymoon safari in Namibia?

“There is no shortage of activities for honeymooning couples in Namibia. Getting out of bed at dawn for an early morning game drive is more romantic than it sounds. To be out and about while the bush wakes up is always worth it, and this is the best time to see predator action too. Afternoon game drives are just as special, and you can usually count on a ‘sundowner’ stop where you can celebrate another fabulous day in Africa while sipping cocktails under a rich sunset sky. Aside from game drives, walking safaris and boat trips are recommended too. A Sossusvlei dune excursion is a must on any honeymoon package: walk hand in hand across the eerie salt pans or climb one of the nearby dunes. Perhaps one of the most romantic activities on offer in Namibia is a hot-air balloon flight. Floating above the shifting sands of the Namib Desert gives a different perspective of this unique environment. The champagne breakfast served at your landing spot in the middle of nowhere is a lovely way to end such a special morning. Adventure-seeking couples can share an adrenaline rush when sand boarding or quad biking around the coastal city of Swakopmund.”

What are the most romantic places for a Namibia honeymoon safari?

“Namibia is such a beautiful country, there is romance to be found wherever you go. But you can’t go everywhere, so you’ll need to make some choices. You don’t want to rush a honeymoon safari, so don’t try to cram too much into your trip. After all, between all the sightseeing, you will need some time to relax together. Wildlife-lovers should go to Etosha National Park. Expect to see lots of elephants and other herbivores drinking at the waterholes. The skittish black rhino is a regular visitor too. The Sossusvlei area in Namib-Naukluft National Park is another must-see destination for newlyweds. Here you’ll find some of the most picture-perfect desert scenes in the country, and you’ll have the opportunity to climb one of the tallest sand dunes in Africa. If you’re in need of an urban fix, the quaint historical town of Swakopmund is worth visiting too. Take a stroll around to admire the German colonial architecture or hit the dunes on a quad bike or sand board. The remote rugged region of Damaraland is another special place for a honeymoon safari. This is where you can see desert-adapted wildlife, most notably elephants and rhinos, elaborate Bushman art and a petrified forest. A stay at Okonjima Nature Reserve, associated with the AfriCat Foundation, is recommended for honeymoon tours too. The sanctuary for big cats does excellent work for conservation and it offers an exciting opportunity to get close to endangered species.”

3

Can we extend our trip with a beach holiday?

“You can easily extend your Namibia safari with a beach holiday. Although there are some direct flights to the capital Windhoek, most visitors to Namibia come through Johannesburg, the main air hub for southern Africa. Idyllic island destinations, such as Mauritius and Seychelles, are only a short flight from Johannesburg. These islands specialize in romantic honeymoons. You might be spoiled with a special dinner on the beach under the stars, a surprise massage for two, or perhaps a champagne sundowner cruise. The white sandy beaches and turquoise waters offer a dream setting for relaxation after your busy safari schedule. Although Namibia’s coastline is not a conventional beach destination, it is worth exploring too. It is where the Namib Desert meets the inhospitable Atlantic Ocean. The vast area sustains a handful of settlements such as Walvis Bay and Lüderitz. But to really appreciate the stark beauty of the coastal region, you need to visit the Skeleton Coast, which is mostly known for its seal colonies and shipwrecks.”

What kind of accommodations can I expect?

“There is no shortage of fabulous lodges and hotels in Namibia. All towns have accommodations in different price categories. This is fortunate, as a honeymoon safari is a once-in-a-lifetime holiday and everything should be perfect, including the accommodations. Although there are some big hotels, smaller establishments are more suitable for a honeymoon safari. These range from homely family-run guesthouses to stylish boutique hotels. When visiting any of the parks or reserves, you’ll most likely stay in a lodge or tented camp. As they aim for an exclusive luxury bush experience, they tend to be small. There is a trend toward sustainability and the camps usually blend in with the environment. In line with this rustic feel, facilities are sometimes deliberately kept basic. The service and food are outstanding and newlyweds can expect the staff to make their stay extra special. Lodgings on the luxury end of the scale are often fully inclusive fly-in destinations that take care of your activities as well.”
