The Selous Game Reserve (now called Nyerere National Park) is Africa’s largest game reserve, with an area of approximately 50,000 km2, representing more than 5% of Tanzania's land surface. It is also one of the oldest reserves, founded in 1896. It is a biodiversity hotspot of miombo woodland (70%), open grassland, riverine forest, and acacia bush. The park contains some of Africa's most significant and widespread animals, like elephants, buffaloes, cats, and wild dogs.
