The Samburu National Reserve is named after the Samburu people of Kenya, who have lived in the area for decades. The reserve is cut through by the Uaso Nyiro River, which is home to a large population of Nile crocodiles. The reserve's topography mainly consists of open savannah (grassland) with clusters of acacia and thorn trees. Notably, the Samburu National Reserve was one of the areas where conservationists George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness.
