The crater measures between 16 and 19 km across and covers an area of 102 square miles (264 square km). Its rim, heavily forested, rises 2,000 feet (610 meters) above the floor, reaching an elevation of 7,500 feet (2,286 meters). The floor of the crater is mostly open grassland and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, black rhinoceroses, leopards, buffalo, zebras, warthogs, wildebeests, Grant’s and Thomson’s gazelles, and the largest concentration of lions in the world.
