Nyerere National Park, previously called Selous Game Reserve, covers 5% of Tanzania's total land mass, approximately 54,600 sq km. It is Africa's largest wildlife reserve and Tanzania's most extensive protected area. Nyerere provides shelter to a large number of elephants, lions, buffaloes, wild dogs, crocodiles, and hippopotamuses. The Rufiji River, which flows through the reserve, also supports abundant birdlife.
