Etosha National Park spans an area of 22,270km² (5,600mi²), with approximately 5,000km² (1,900mi²) consisting of saline depressions or pans. The largest of these is the Etosha Pan, which can be categorized as a saline desert in its own right. Located in the Owambo Basin on the northwestern edge of the Namibian Kalahari Desert, the Etosha Pan was part of a vast shallow lake until about 3 million years ago. The park is home to a variety of species, including the endemic black-faced impala.
