It's home to many volcanoes, including the Erta'Ale, Tat'Ale, and Alayta volcanic shield complex, and the Alid volcano. The Danakil Depression is one of the hottest places on Earth, with average temperatures of 34.4°C and highs that can exceed 48°C. It also receives very little rainfall, with an average of 100–200 millimeters per year.
