5 Questions About Uganda Honeymoon Safaris
Why is Uganda a good choice for a honeymoon holiday?
“Uganda is a great choice for a honeymoon safari, because there is beauty wherever you go. Enjoying unique experiences in such a wondrous country is perfect for adventurous honeymooners. Imagine setting out with your loved one to tackle gorilla trekking, one of Africa’s greatest bucket-list adventures. Sharing a sundowner drink together on the iconic boat trip along the Victoria Nile in Murchison Falls National Park. Looking for the famous tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Or heading to the remote northeast and the traditional lands of the Karamojong people. Uganda is a top destination in Africa, and experiencing it with someone close to your heart is a true privilege.”
1Are there recommended activities for a Uganda honeymoon safari?
“There are plenty of activities recommended for honeymooning couples in Uganda. Although the country is less well known than Kenya and Tanzania, Uganda is a more rounded safari destination. The ultimate highlight for newlyweds is a gorilla trek. It will be a memory to treasure together for the rest of your lives. Tracking chimps is equally rewarding. When spending some precious time with them, you’ll be in no doubt of who our closest relatives are. These great apes and many other primates live in dense forest, and being in this pristine habitat is a special experience in itself. But there is plenty of savannah in Uganda too. On game drives, you might see lions, buffalo, zebras, giraffes, large herds of elephants and much more. Boat tours are equally recommended for honeymooners, with a sunset cruise perhaps the most magical option. And don’t miss out on a night drive in Lake Mburo National Park. You might see some nocturnal animals, such as bush babies, genets or maybe even a leopard on the prowl. Whatever you spot, holding hands and looking up into the night sky away from any light pollution with the sounds of the bush all around is truly wonderful.”
2What are the most romantic places for a Uganda trip?
“There is no shortage of romantic places to visit on a Uganda honeymoon trip. Scenic Queen Elizabeth NP is fabulous for a variety of activities, such as chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge and a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel. The wildlife is diverse and you might witness the very unusual sight of a large pride of lions lazing in a tree in the Ishasha sector of the park. Murchison Falls NP is equally recommended for a honeymoon. The park offers excellent wildlife viewing, as well as incredible scenic beauty. The spectacular Murchison Falls are best seen from a boat trip along the Nile to the base of the waterfall. A short hike at the top of the falls gives you a different perspective. Although these places are hardly crowded, you can get even more remote on your honeymoon by heading to Kidepo Valley National Park. In the far northeast, Kidepo offers a true wilderness experience and is home to many species that don’t occur elsewhere in the country, including the graceful cheetah. For gorilla trekking, you’ll have to go to Bwindi Impenetrable or Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks. The most reliable place to see chimpanzees is Kibale National Park. Kibale can get a bit busy, so as a honeymoon treat consider booking the more exclusive chimp habituation experience. This special program allows you to spend a full day with chimps instead of the standard hour-long visit.”
3Can we extend our Uganda honeymoon safari with a beach holiday?
“It is easy to extend your Uganda honeymoon safari with a beach getaway. Uganda is landlocked, but if you’re looking for some chill time on the water’s edge, you can end your safari with a stay at Lake Bunyonyi. You won’t find any typical beach resorts at this scenic mountain-ringed lake, but there is a cluster of small-scale ecofriendly lodges that blend into the rural village scene. Little touched by tourism, it is a captivating choice for a honeymoon. You’ll need to travel a bit further to find a more conventional beach destination. Luckily, it’s only a short flight to the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, Africa’s main transport hub. From here your options are endless, but why not head to Zanzibar off the coast of mainland Tanzania? This mystical spice island has everything you could wish for on a honeymoon.”
4What kind of accommodations can I expect?
“There is a good variety of accommodations available in Uganda. There are hotels offering all mod cons in the rooms, such as wifi, air-conditioning, hair dryer and TV. These might have carpeted rooms and they generally feel like a safe haven from the bush with all its creepy-crawlies. Other lodges deliberately offer more of a bush experience. The small, exclusive rustic accommodations in the latter category are a very romantic choice for a honeymoon. They might only have six to 10 units. There are many different styles, but there is a trend toward using canvas and thatch. This can be either in the form of a traditional standing safari tent under a thatched roof, or something between a room and a tent with canvas walls on a wooden frame. These lodges aim to fit into the environment with minimal carbon footprint. They might run on solar power and only have electricity at certain times of the day. Wifi might only be available in the communal lounge and hot ‘bush’ showers might have to be prepared on request. Although very rustic, these luxury establishments usually offer outstanding food and service. You might even be assigned a private housekeeper who will take care of all your needs. This includes early morning wake-up calls with coffee and cleaning your shoes after gorilla trekking.”
